Has anyone added auxilliary heat to their SD? If so, how much trouble and cost ?
I dont know personally, but I have read that it is not possible to add after the fact as there are several things that are different to accommodate the electric heater unit in trucks so equipped.
If you are talking about the OEM rapid heat option, that unit alone needs 150 amps. That is why you get two alternators when you have the extra heat option.
IMO, even though it’s a cheap option, don’t waste your money.
I had it on my last truck..I didn’t order it on my 2020. The heat should be instant. It isn’t.
To address the OPs original question - I've also heard its not really an option for trucks that didn't come with it.
My truck has it, and I THINK its beneficial; however, I don't really have anything to compare to. Does it warm up faster than my neighbor's older Dodge? Yes. Is it like a hair dryer blowing out of my dash vents? No. I'd just like to be able to see if its actually on or not sometimes, and I don't know if it can be monitored in FORScan...

Not sure on the >2017 trucks, but on the 2016s it requires either the Extra Heavy Duty single alt (200a) or Dual Alts.

Agree that it is a very small amount of heat but it is better than nothing, as the 6.7 takes a little bit to warm up in cold weather. Thus a little heat is better than no heat on a cold morning.
I can tell that it is running in my 2016 by monitoring Batt V on my Edge CTS. I have a single DC Power XP270 amp alt that outputs 200a at hot idle. My cold Batt V is 14.5-14.6 when Rapid Heat is not operating. When it is operating it drops to 14.1-14.3. With the OEM EHD 200a alt Batt V would drop to 13.6-13.8 when Rapid Heat was operating.

I have the rapid heat on my 2019 F350 and my truck has a single alternator.

Did your window sticker show the rapid heat option? I have the single alternator, as well. Sometimes I think I feel a little extra heat, but my sticker doesn't show that option on my truck. Thanks
OP. Google Webasto heaters. A couple of work buddies have them installed and their trucks warm up fast. I think this is what you meant by auxiliary heaters. Price is around 1500-2000 CAD from what I heard.
Buddy of mine has it. It's what? 1500w? That's what my wife's hair dryer is rated at. Waste of money according to him but I don't have personal experience.
I ordered the Rapid Heat Supplemental Heater it's $250 option I don't care for since I live in FL
The 397Amp alternator was what I really wanted to charge batteries in my truck camper while running
My '12 F-250 had the rapid heat option. I always had the heater in the floor position and really never felt much. After switching it to the dash position and turning the fan to the second speed, it was hot before I left my driveway which is 50' long.
