Hail destroyer is just a troll when it comes to new motors/fuel injection... He always bashes new stuff and makes b.s. statements about old being better than new.
Nothing wrong with liking the old stuff just like there is nothing wrong with liking the new stuff.
I hope Ford or aftermarket supports the 7.3 but let's not forget the 6.2 is not a bad motor and was even used is Raptors. There are still very few swaps that use them because of the lack of aftermarket and easy wiring solutions. This is where I hope Ford takes a page out of GMs books and either makes harnesses and/or makes it easy for programers to get past the security of the ECU. The guys that flashed my Ford ECU said I had to use a mustang ECU because no one has gotten past the PATs in the f150 ECU.
Maybe we need to send strongly worded letters to ford racing?
I like 460's and have a car with 429 and a 460 waiting to be built to go in my dent someday. But I traded the 95 dually 460 to get a 12 SD with 6.2. Pulling same trailer same route and it was night and day. The 6.2 is just dead silent at idle pulls great. If the 7.3 is more of the same and better it has to be a winner. I keep thinking if motor home market was still using gas motors and Ford supplied engines they might have to supply a simpler harness. There is a inboard boat manufacturer that uses 6.2s.
The 7.3 is going to be a fantastic option for these older trucks, and weigh a lot less than a 460. You'll never get the big cubic inches of which the 460 is capable though.
If most BBF's at 600 HP are selling for $12K, let me be the first to throw my hat in the ring for anyone who wants one for that price. I have a 557 with forged bottom end and aluminum heads and manifold that makes well over that, for much less than $12k. Be glad to build the same for anybody who wants a drop-in for his truck! #thinki'minthewrongbusiness! LOL

I do not not doubt your capability to build a performance motor but there are some factors that are being left out.
Ford racing motors have 100% brand new parts
They have a warranty
Ford is not a small shop that can shut down if things go south. If they have a product they have to stand behind it.
They have techs you can call with questions and problems.
Many people can build a motor but there are reasons people spend the extra money for a Ford racing motor.
In the world of performance 12k is not a lot. I know small town dirt track racers that spend 30k on motors. I should find out if those have a warranty or not. Never asked.
Performance, reliability, low cost. You only get to pick two... I repeatedly learn this lesson the hard way.

what shop did you buy your 557 crate from and how much power and what was the cost?
My biggest take away here is that, other than fuel injection, the reason these engines can produce such high HP numbers and still get decent mpg is variable cams?
