I’m looking to buy a 2003 F-250 6.0 it has the egr delete has 165k. Just looking at advice as to what I need to look for when looking at the truck. New to the diesel world. I currently have a 98 F-150 4.2 also wondering what kind of mileage to expect out of the truck and what would be some good mods to prolong engine life.
There is a 6.0 forum I you scroll down a bit more on the forum page.
I love my 6.0, I almost dont need a diesel anymore as I rarely tow heavy- but it's my baby.
I dont daily drive it, when when pulling small equipment.
A maintained 6.0 is a happy 6.0. Check out the sticky at the top of the of0 forum, tons of good info in there.
They dont need any crazy mods to be a good engine. I have 4 inch exhaust and I want an upgraded ficm one day.
Before you buy it get some Info from a monitoring device. Torque for android is popular. Not sure what iPhone guys use., test drive it, get it up to temp post up the readings. It I'll give you a good baseline on where to start.
Personally when I'm looking at 6.0s I always expect the worst and anticipate spending 5 grand on it in the near future.... because ya never know

what kind of monitoring device do I need? And what all am I looking to read? I’m actually supposed to look at it today. They are going to drive it from an hour away to my job site. I do some mid weight towing I have a fence company I currently have a 05 z71 Tahoe it does great but I need something bigger that will last.
Best advice I can give you is find the best diesel shop in your area and ask if they do what is known as a pre purchase inspection. They have the experience, tools and lift to check every surface and system of the truck. I have a lift at home and I can find things that you can’t see crawling under the truck. A inspection should run $150 or around that.. But you’ll know what is and isn’t wrong with the truck and what work it has and has not been done. Unless the seller has paperwork on any claimed work, that you can call the shop to verify, it’s all fugazi. I watched this special where a guy falsified maintenance and repair receipts. I’m not trying to insult your intelligence, but unless you KNOW what to look for you may be buying a pig in a poke.
Oh and if the seller starts tap dancing when you say you want a mechanical inspection.....walk away. I don’t care how “great” a deal it is. Walk away. There are hundreds of thousands of these trucks out there. There is no reason to buy someone’s headache trash heap.
Travis if you buy this truck contact Swamps for a 140 volt FICM upgrade it's the best money I spent on my 7.3. I'm not a 6.0 owner myself so I can't help a lot.
