Quick question as I await my ordered Lariat, Does the navigation use satellite? I plan to use my Google maps, but thought the navi would come in handy in some remote areas that my ATT does not get a signal where camping.
Yes, the navigation system uses satellites.
It does what you are wanting.

The truck has a GPS receiver that uses satellites to fix its position. It then takes that position and puts it on a moving map, the moving map data is stored in your trucks computer. You can accomplish the same thing with your phone by pre-downloading map data into memory. That way you won't need an internet connection in those remote areas.

Skylaneman brings up a valid point and I didn’t pick up on the fact that Paul is using Google Maps.
Paul, in Google Maps, click on your account and select Offline Maps. Next, click Custom Map and select the area you want to download (do this on WiFi). Play with it a little, you can download some large areas....or small areas...depending on what you want to accomplish.

Yes the Nav is off Satellite. To get the instant traffic update you need Sirius. I go to a lot of places here in Texas with no Cellular coverage. So the factory nav works fine. If I am in a city and have problems I can use Google Maps, that is what on my 2015 I was not paying for Ford's update.

The OEM nav is nearly worthless. Updates are expensive and still behind by a year or so. There is so much development in my area that I can’t use it to a degree of reliability.
This ties i to comments I made about Sync updates in another thread. Ford should fire the entire Sync team and hire people who know what they’re doing and let them do it or contract with a proven aftermarket company.
I 100% agree with your last paragraph.
I know it’ll never happen so I’m not going to hold my breath but if Ford and all vehicle manufacturers would swallow their pride and ask both Apple and Google to help build their infotainment systems instead of relying on vendors that are not experts in such areas, this would benefit all consumers and eliminate many of the problems owners have or are having.
Imagine what that would do for sales. Just offering a system built by one or each of those companies. It could be modular, you could choose at purchase time or swap out later.

Sounds like a great idea to me.
Two different APIM’s........CarPlay based or Android based and said system would update whenever a new phone update comes out.
Except that SYNC is a lot more than navigation. You'd be asking Google and / or Apple to not only do a nav system but to design and maintain all the other parts of the SYNC system which they both have limited experience doing.
Let me give a vote of approval for Sync3 and it’s navigation system. I’ve been extremely happy with it since I took delivery three years ago. It has yet to have fail me and the map system has been on the money 99.9% of the time so I haven’t needed to update. I would recommend it.

Very true, SYNC is much more than just “navigation” hence the reason I said “Infotainment” in my previous reply.
I really don’t think SYNC has anything that both Apple and Google hasn’t seen before so maintaining such a system designed and built by Apple or Google around iOS or Android would be just as easy to maintain and update as a cell phone.
From day one, I was not impressed with Sync and navigation. Having driven a GM work vehicle with the factory navigation, I really had low expections. I have owned several Garmins and Magellans since 2003. So my expections were not very high regarding Fords Sync system.
Until Hurricane Harvey, I had not needed to utilize all the features of the system. By bringing up the weather map, I could see the direction I needed to go to get out of the storm the quickest.
After that time I knew that I would always have the factory nav and Sirius radio in at least one of my vehicles. I recently paid the money to update the map in my truck and was pleasantly surprised at the difference. It's not great, but much better than the 1.14 my truck came with.
But.......I still have my Garmin and AA on my phone. Just in case.
I use and like the factory navigation in my Lariat and it has never sent me in the wrong direction but, I like to switch up now and then and use other navigation systems so having a backup is always nice.
Currently, I have and use eight different ones with seven of them on my iPhone and six can be used via CarPlay.

I really like the graphics and UI on some of the Garmins I’ve seen online but I’ve never owned one.
I’m surprised that Garmin doesn’t have or offer such a navigation app without purchasing an actual Garmin unit.
The main thing I like about the factory system you can have it display the turns directly in front of you between the speedo and tack. besides announcing ahead of time what the nest move will be. even with the construction in Dallas Fort Worth area it got me downtown amid the construct to Baylor Medical. I left the D-FW area and moved back home in 1999 There has been so many changes since I left. Of course all the growth from 1974-1999 is what made me move home to start with. The money just wasn't worth the rat race any more.
