i'm not new to FTE but i think this is my first post. ? is about sudden oil use. 99.5/ 7.3. i had to add 1 gallon of oil on my last oil level check. i has never used oil that much. it's not a leak that i can see on the ground. i added riffraff oil crossover lines about 4 months ago/2500 miles. ebpv delete about the same time. other than that its stock with 190,000 miles. starts and runs fine. i do notice a puff of smoke when at cruising speed/60 mph if i accelerate a little more. i think it is a little sluggish on take off up about 30 mph. but not a big deal for me. it tows fine and is a daily driver. any thoughts on why the sudden oil usage ? i appreciate all the help i can get.
If you are down a gallon, 3 more qts and the injectors would not open (injectors open with oil pressure) and the truck would not run. Truck would not be 'hurt', just not run. If you put on new oil pressure lines, did you use the old connections or put new one on it. The O-rings in the connections do degrade over time and will 'leak' at the connection. Check the valley for oil and see if it traces back to the HPOP connections and leaks down under the ipr . If the HPOP line connections orings are wore out, a bounce here and there may allow a heavy 'leak' that mostly goes unnoticed.
Oil in the valley will drain out the back at a weep hole.
Riffraff should have new connections.
I know that DieselOring.com has new connections and overhaul kits if you want to go that route.
Pull the intake and see how much oil is coming out the CCV into the turbo.
Pull the fuel filter and see if there is oil in there. Some will say our trucks wont get oil in the fuel with leaking orings, but I have seen at least one that did.
I have also had a truck that was loosing oil through a bad injector. Wish there was a better way of diagnosing it but we were only able to stop the oil consumption by replacing all the injectors.
If you have them out for orings there might be visual cues to one leaking internally.
Oil can definitely go to the fuel due to bad injector o-rings, saw several examples when I worked for International. Look in the fuel bowl and see if it's clean fuel or if it's dark. It could also be leaking through a bad turbo seal and get burnt so you wouldn't see oil but you might get smoke, and you mentioned that you get some smoke, but didn't state the color of the smoke.
Generally, turbo seal failure makes smoke. It’s worse idling and taking off, but less noticeable when running. This is always combined with play in the turbo shaft. Easy to check this.
If internal injector problem (worn P&B’s, etc), the problem is much harder to narrow down to an individual injector.
Its almost impossible to get oil in the fuel in a stock SuperDuty because of the deadheaded fuel system. International and OBS trucks get black filters because of ‘regulated return’.
You might see an underperforming injector(s) with Perdels and in extreme cases with CCT.
If truck is running good otherwise, I’d be tempted to drive it as long as turbo checks out OK.

thanks for the quick reply. as far as the oil consumption goes it just started. i would say the level was good a few weeks ago. not sure of how many miles. i would say less than a 1,000. i also installed a riffraff fuel crossover at the same time i installed hpop crossover.so i'm thinking that may relieve the deadhead pressure. i have ordered the rebuild kit for the turbo and will get that installed as soon as it arrives. i did notice excessive white smoke one morning a week ago and it cleared up within a couple miles. i will check the fuel filter for contaminants. thanks for the help.
Les,
one of the first things i checked after finding the oil level so low was for leaks because i did install riffraff oil crossover tubes. i wasn't real happy with the fitting type used on this setup but it isn't leaking oil into the valley. i cleaned that area really well when i did the fuel and oil crossover. i was down 4 gallons of oil, so if there was a leak i would have noticed. the plan is to rebuild the turbo. also i will check out the fuel filter for contaminants. coolant looks good , no oil in that. i will keep everyone that replied up to speed with the repairs/troubleshooting. i'm retired so the rebuild shouldn't take long. right now i'm waiting parts.
I just did oil change a few days ago. For shiats, i rechecked today. Needed to add 3qts...not sayn you messed up on oil change/level...but, it happens.
as for ccv, mine will bleed vapors/oil thru the boots. Need to tear apart and clean soo. May just reroute the ccv to atmosphere since she gets used ALOT
When I switched to AIS intake with AC codes and 38R, my oil consumption went through the roof. I installed it and drove to TX and back - using 3 gals of oil to go 2500 miles. I could pop the filter minder at will.
Got it rid of the restrictive AIS and oil consumption returned to normal.
ok, about the 1 gallon of missing engine oil. turns out there was no problem with the oil level. i should probably get the "bonehead" award for this . turns out the plastic handle on my dipstick was snapped off / broke from the serpentine belt fraying on one edge so i didn't have it down in the tube far enough. i discovered this because i did an oil change so i new the level was correct then i was able to adjust the broken dipstick in the tube until i was on the full mark. thats when i discovered i wasn't even close to where i checked it originally. anyway, all is well i ordered a new dipstick and am sure i will be back to normal which is 1 qt. every oil change / 5,000 miles. maybe that should be the "dipstick award".
