Cant start after rebuild

Need some help please!
I rebuilt my 95 7.3 from ground up. Oil won't stay in hpop res. Jacked up rear end test and stays full, Guage goes up, lots of cranking
after about a 12 sec. count a light ticking starts and the cel comes on. Turn key off and I can crank again for same amount of time then it happens again.
had it scanned by a friends diesel scanner and it said that all the electronics look good. I don't know if it's my lpop, hpop, electrical or all the above. After some time of sitting
the hpop res will drain down but will fill fast when cranking. I am at a loss. Only thing I didn't replace in this build was the fuel filter housing and the hpop. Thanks for any help!

What kind of fuel pressure do you have at the Schrader valve after turning over for 12 seconds or so?

Jacking up rear end lets the HPOP stay full?

12 seconds and a light ticking? from where?

What did you do for your rebuild?

Thanks for the replies!
I did a full rebuild from the ground up. Got the rebuild kit from RiffRaff. I don’t know where the ticking is coming from exactly, can’t pinpoint. The fuel pressure is less than 20 but before the sound started after about 40 sec cranking period it was around 30 psi. Reservoir stays full with backend up. I also just replaced the rear oil cooler header because I noticed that the relief valve was gone. And just put a new Melling lpop on. The truck was running before rebuild but rough. Fuel was dumping into oil, that’s why I pulled it. Then on closer look into one of the cylinders one piston was melted and scared the sidewall. So just rebuilt tha dang thing. Everything important is new except for the fuel filter housing and HPOP.

Did you filled the oil rails with oil? If you didn't its going to take forever to start.

Jacking up rear end lets the HPOP stay full could mean the suction feed to LPOP has an issue but did your remove your HPOP? maybe the wrong gasket was used to cause the quick drain down.

Good point but I matched up the old with new before installing. I’m putting in fluids again today and will see what she does...

I didn’t fill the rails with oil and I know now I should have! After my last session of cranking I looked in the rails and they were about 3/4 full and awhile back I couldn’t see any in there at all. I also have been doing 3 12 sec cranks in a row before letting starter cool. Hopefully doing this i will not mess with the cel and that ticking sound. Idk

new fuel pump? there was an aftermaket one that does not seat well. maybe that the tick?
loosen the two bolts to it about 2 turns and if ticking is less then you know.

you can crank for 30, rest five min

do you what the CEL is?

Plug it in too, this will allow the oil to circulate faster plus put heat in the top end.

I think I have seen oil temperatures around 100F after being plugged in a few hours when it is about 50F out. No need to glow even then.

No I don’t know code yet, the fuel pump came with kit from Riffraff. Fuel pressure is 20-22. It is plugged in and charged the batts overnight. I don’t mind cranking for longer but don’t know if I’m hurting something with that sound. Yesterday I only got in 4 cycles do to the bats dropping to 10v with them plugged in. Do y’all know a good Bluetooth scanner for this year of truck?? Seen some peeps talk about one from amazon.
thanks guys!

Plug in block heater for 30 min, disconnect your GPR and then crank it until pressure comes up/fires

scanner to monitor your engine

Amazon Amazon

Valve covers still on or off? If off, pull the glow plugs...it will spin over much quicker to fill the HPOP system. I did that after I changed the plugs on the heads and HPOP hoses.

Agreed on unplugging GPR. There is a quick disconnect at it, two wires. Red and pink or something like that. Leave the constant hot from battery attached and the output attached.

You will get there!!
