Front auto hubs won't lock on my '95 XLT. From reading other posts, I gather it's because I liberally greased the hubs after cleaning them during the last time I had them apart. I also saw advise telling me to upgrade hubs with Warn manual hubs and a conversion kit. Any more info on this conversion kit? Is it made by Warn? Part number?
Popular ones around here seem to be the MileMarker Premiums or the Warn setup. If you've got the 3-screw hubs on that '95, then you'll also need a conversion kit. I haven't done the conversion myself, but I'm eventually getting to it.
Ditch the auto's. I did and I havent looked back. (or gotten stuck since) You should be able to find the warns at most parts stores although they may have to order them. The conversion kit is just replacement spindle nut, lock ring and lock nut to replace the existing 2 1/2 in spindle nut with the older spanner wrench type. You can swap them out in about 30 min per side, and about the only you may need to purchace is the spanner nut wrench. If you dont already have one see if you can get the 2 1/2 in socket from a parts store on loan. Also clean your old hubs and soak in atf then drain and keep them in a sealed container of some type. If you ever decided to sell your bronco (but who would) they look like a good thing to those who dont know they are a POS.
I'm confidant that your packing them full of grease is what caused them to screw up. If you decide to go manual, I would be interested in buying your old auto hubs. I'd like to have spare set. Email me at : rvcams(-at-)aol.com.
You only need the conversion kit IF the auto's only have three bolts holding them to the wheel. Otherwise the Warn and Milemarkers and a few others are direct replacement for the OEM auto hubs.
Had the same problem on my 1996 F-150 EB (tho I am not sure of the cause). I changed the hubs out to warn premiums and would definately recommend it. It took me all of 4 hours to do.
