Power Steering Quest Update
... That would get us part way there. Let's say a 79 LTD pump puts out 1000 PSI. OK, now what? I don't have a Volare, or an MII handy to test. Us rodders cut them all up dammit. We really need some specs. I tried a net search too. It's not working out. ...
That experiment will get you all the way there - with 10% of the effort we've spent trying to find printed numbers. I also did a pretty thorough (although not a 5-star) search for the PS pressure data when the original thread came out, and found bupkiss. Thus, I didn't post anything. Being an experimentalist, it really seems to me that it would take less effort to get real numbers than to spend all this effort looking for book numbers. You don't think there is somebody out there that has the donor car, and HASN'T cut it up yet? Heck, for that matter, you can probably go the local boneyard, install the gage in a junk car, start it up, check the pressure, and leave. No charge. Just tell them you want to see if it's a runner.
Just a reminder - all this thinking I'm doing is in the service of you non-stockers
. It's giving me a headache and I'm going to bill you for the aspirin. I already have my PS pressures - 0 psi at all RPM and all steering positions.
RMF
I think we hit a nerve with PENN Dick. Now were getting somewhere.
Hold that thought Dick, you'll have to pay for it later.
BTW, at least my Volare has good brakes. I guess I should have re-read the old thread too because it clouds the issue. I have been web searching too. I have found numerous statements that Ford pumps also put out PSI in that range. I have found Hi Perf Ford pumps from AGR that put out up to 1500 PSI for use with add-on hydraulic winches for the 4x4 crowd. That leads me to believe stock Ford must be less then 1500.
The Mopar pump specs are what needs verified. If it's what RMF says, there likely isn't a big problem. A small cooler would solve the heat issue I may or may not really even have. I have been doing lots of field research (squeezing people HP PS hoses when they aren't looking) My Bronco runs cool, while other stock setups run just as hot as my Effie. I think this is going to end with the addition of a cooler and a light spring trimming.
BTW, I have found more than one Volare F100 owner that looks at me like I'm stupid when I raise this issue. Scott on the other hand is wearig stuff out left and right.
We have people talking about non-Ford, non-truck stuff here
'Fenders
Did something happen to your truck that caused you to drive that Mopar thing?
My Papa told me to pick out one thing at life and become great at it. Can ya guess what I chose to be?

I tried to help get you off the hook Dick, but unfortunately I struck out too.

I was sitting here thinking to myself "who might have access to this sort of info?". Then I remembered the "friendly" mechanic that I take my daily driver to when I get baffled, the job exceeds my skills & equipment, or I just don't feel like laying in the snow that day).
For sure he has all the manufacturers specs, or access to them.I just gave him a call, and I got a recording stating that he has recently gone out of business. I'm bummed!
This guy was honest, reliable, and worked on my family's vehicles for many years. I'm sure he would have had the info, and probably would have been happy to look up for us.
Wait ... what's that I smell? Could it be the odor of hideously abused Dexron III? This looks like a job for Pressure Measurement Man!!!
I apreciate the recipe you put together for us to make a tester, however my mopar steering steering box is presently sitting in Euphemia attached to the IFs (where it belongs) but with no steering column attached whereas my 90 F150 pwr steering pump sits on the 4 X 8 plywood laying on the rear half of frame acting as a catch all for all the engine components that I presently stripping off the enemic 302 that sits in the rear corner of the garage. In other words - neither the donor nor the recipient run.
I suspect the little thingie that PJS55 found for us will likely solve our/my problem but until I get the 302 PS pump pressure I won't know for sure. Isn't there some secret "Engineer" hotline that you Engineer guys can call when us common folk ask you questions you don't know the answer to so that you continue to appear all knowing, all seeing? (Boy that was a long sentence....I'm tired).
So! It isn't your suggestion was not apreciated - it's just not usable in my case.
But thanks!!
Penn Dick - Are you going to be much longer? I have to go for dinner soon. In a matter of days, those brown and white bombers need to begin their southward journey. Your success or failure could influence the route I suggest they use....you know what I mean?
Later,
I have guages at work I could borrow. I could probably even figure out what sort of fitting is on the steering box end of my HP hose and check my Ford pressure.
Now what should I do with this pressure reading when I get it George. I still won't know what a Volare pump......... Waiiiiiiiiiit! I've finally got it. PENN Dick can buy a running 70s Mopar on eBay. He could just check his pump pressure. Post the info right here and everything's all good again.

PENN Dick, can you bring RMF and me another beer while you're up. And could you sweep before you leave tonight. This place is lookin' pretty rough again.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
I think there are about 40 diferent styles and brands of power steering pumps.
I think there are about 30 diferent power steering boxes being used.
This works out to about 1200 possible combinations.
I'm going to take two asprins and go to bed.
It's a known fact that 47.2% of all statistics are made up on the spot.

Yah? so what's your point? Penn Dick isn't doing anything else.
2. Get the post back on page 1 so it's in Penn Dick's face.
Please excuse Penn Dick (I think that is sooo cute) from searching for your information for a few days.
They came and took him to the Center late last night, it seems that his battle with the Squirrls, (They were getting his Truck thingie and Boat) finally drove him over the edge.
He was incoherient when they loaded him in the ambulance but I recall him mumbling about FTE in his sleep for the past several days. I looked and found this message.
Thanks
Dick's Wife.
Might be able to put the guages on a Ford pump now and get somewhere with this. As rumoured, the GM pump could very well be a problem. It also partially explains the "fast" steering I am noticing with the Mopar box.
Steering gear ratios
70s Ford variable ratio- 19 to 16
70’s Saginaw GM and others 17.5
70’s Mopar- 15.7
PS Pump pressures
GM V-8 1350-1450PSI
GM L6 1200-1300PSI
Mopar 1200-1300PSI
Big Ford Not listed but I know the aftermarket high volume/high pressure pumps advertise 1500PSI
There were a few weird ones out there like Corvettes and GM station wagons with specs around 1000 PSI
I also learned that the Volare pump puts out the correct amount of pressure for the Volare steering gear box. Amazing stuff huh.
