Hello everyone, does anyone know which fuel pump assembly i need to buy for my truck (1986 ford f250 460 duel fuel tank rwd) i need to purchase both the front and rear assemblies but on rock auto it lists a bunch of different options and says plastic tanks and stuff and I'm super confused. Any help would be much appreciated.
Ok so it is saying mostly plastic tank(s) do you have plastic tanks or not?
Aft axle and rear tank is the same tank and 99.9% of the time 19 gallon
Driver side mount, mid ship and front tank are all the same tanks. On long bed trucks this would be a 19 gallon tank / short bed would be 16 gallon tank.
Does that help any?

edit: I just looked a little closer at the RA site parts and it looks like the pump for rear tank is plastic tank only.
It does not say anything for the front tank if metal or plastic.

Just to add a little. I think the 16 vs. 19 gallon tank is more complicated than short vs. long wheel base. But if I remember correctly, I've seen tank combinations in 19/19 16/20 and 18/20 I think. Also, I think in addition to year to year differences on the size of the tank opening, I think the plastic tanks had the larger opening for the fuel pump and senders had the smaller and the metal tanks were split on opening size on the in tank pumps. But I don't know much of anything about tank dimensions as far as pickup length. I'll do some digging and see if I can figure out what was stock for tank material. In the meantime, if you can check to see if your tanks or metal or plastic it'll help narrow it down.
*EDIT* At rough glance, there are 4-5 different tanks used, haven't narrowed it down to a dual tank setup yet. It would help if you posted your vin/door sticker. Also, what trim package is your truck?
I have only seen 16/19 on short bed trucks and I know for a fact you can not install an 19 gallon front tank on a short bed truck, and 19/19 in long beds.
Now yes they did have different size openings for senders, non pump = small opening and large for pump and send.
Then you have metal & plastic tanks.

I am not sure of the exact year, possibly around 1984? Whenever it was, they made a clean swap from small opening tanks to large opening tanks. Before then, no trucks had a in tank pump. When they started putting in tank pumps in some of their trucks, they changed all the tanks to large opening tanks. The first trucks to get a in tank pump where the 460 equipped trucks.
For instance, if you look up a f150 long bed with a 300 six, it always had a carb all the way through 1986. But you will find a early year tank (say 1980-1982) will not be the same as a later 1985-86 tank because of the tank opening size. The sending unit of course will be different also. Even though this setup was carbed with no in tank pump all the way through to 1986.
To the original thread starter; Looks like rockauto does not have a rear sending unit for the most common rear tank setup, which was metal.
Ended up just getting after it and dropping both tanks today, grabbed some pics of both tanks and pumps, I have dual metal tanks that I'm assuming are both 19 gallons.
I've got a 19 gallon midship in my short wheel base truck.
You may be able to stuff 19 gallons in the tank but there is no way a factory 19 gallon tank will fit in place of the 16 gallon front / side / mid ship tank on a short bed truck as I tried.
If you did get a factory 19 in place of a 16 please tell us how you did it as I want to know.

Maybe year to year differences? I haven't swapped the tank, it's stock. Now, saying short vs. long wheel base doesn't mean much because the actual wheel base numbers differ for different years or models.
Also I'm unable to find the rear tank pump assembly anywhere, if someone has a link for it that would be awesome.
Measure the diameter of the top of those pumps, then I'd look under different models and different engines for your model on rock auto and look for ones that that list the cap size. I saw some that did and some that didn't after clicking on info. Out of curiosity why do you have to replace both pumps? Has one been out for awhile and the other just went out, or did both quit at once?

I can't think of any major differences in wheelbase numbers for the different body styles from 1980 through 1995, through 1998 for the f250hd and f350. Bodies bolt right on through all those years. Frames are basically the same with very minor differences at the front bumper area.

Yeah the rear has been out for quite a while and the front just died, the sending assemblies are also inop so I'm just replacing all of it.
