Ok so my excursion has been hard to shift into park and all other gears I was going to replace there piece on the trans but before I got to it the truck wouldn't go into park all the way a few times other times was able to get it but the last time couldn't so I reached under and did it by hand the truck was running at the time but when I did the gauges went out and it died .now it wont start back up turns over but wont start. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks
Check that the shift handle is firmly attached to the steering column. This is a bit of a pain (especially for big guys). Your symptoms sound like the selector switch isn't in engaging correctly.
Remove the cover plate under the steering column and lay on the floor so that you can see up to the steering column. 2 bolts hold the shifter to the column. They have a tendency to work loose and when they do the travel in the switch mechanism is no longer aligned with the movement of the shifter. Move the shifter up and down and watch the mechanism. It should be visibly evident if things are loose or working normally. (Have you found a bolt on the floor under the steering wheel lately?) Tightening the two bolts should put everything back in order.
For clarification: You were having difficulty with the shift selector? To solve the problem at one point you reached up under the dash, I assume? Or on the transmission itself? When you did that it was idling in park and then just died out when you moved whatever you moved? What do you mean by "gauges went out"? Every gauge needle fell? Lights stopped working? Is there power to anything else? So now when you turn the key, you get the starter engaging and rotating the engine but it won't actually fire?
Typically, when the selector is in the wrong position I don't think the starter will turn at all, at least that's been my experience. It will go to "run" and all the lights will come on and do their thing, but turning the key to "start" will have no effect - just as if you put the selector in "D" and tried to start it (because that's what it is thinking that you've done). If you reached up under the dash, I would suspect that you knocked a wire loose somewhere or shorted an already loose wire out. It seems like maybe the PCM might not be getting power for some reason because the PCM controls the gauges as well as the spark and fuel, but not the starter. You'd get no activity on the gauge cluster (watch the tach while you're cranking it and see if it bobbles at all) but the starter will spin.
Another thing that you might check is if you might have disturbed the anti-theft system in some way. I believe it cuts spark and/or fuel but will still let the starter spin.
I put in in park under the truck on the transmission not the shifter. And yes gauges went out as I did that and truck shut off . Now when you turn it on gauges dont move like gas gauge battery etc. The theft light isn't blinking fast like it's a problem so i didnt think that was an issue

ok so my wife pulled up in the drive way couldn't get the truck to go into park it still wanted to roll backwards, the shifter has been getting harder to move . So with her in the truck I went under and on the trans in put it in park when I did that the gauges like fuel gauge oil pressure and other all went out then the truck died . When I went to restart it it will turn over but wont fire up
I will check i just thought it was weird as soon as i manually put it in park it happened
thank you so much I'm pretty sure it was 19 .battery is to low now to start will have to wait till wife get home to jump it but now the gauges move so looks like a good sign
