2004 Excursion, New engine complete with new starter last year.
My excursion won't crank sometimes. When it does crank, starts fine. I can go days with no problem and then it will happen multiple times in a few days. To get it started I have to play with the key back and forth, move the shift lever back and forth many times, and finally it starts. I have tried to start it in neutral but it makes no difference. It seems the colder it gets the worse it is. Any ideas?
geeze. I remember awhile back someone was talking about a wire chaffing problem in the steering column I dont remember the details but I would track down a wiring diagram of the starter circuit and start ohming out wires when its in the no start mood. It sounds like a bad wire or shorting wires.
Look at the connector in the steering column as well as the mechanism for the shifter inside the column. Had a truck at work doing the same thing, the grease had gotten hard and the switch that signals the truck was in park was not moving enough to open the circuit. If you get results from moving the shifter back and forth it may be that switch. We cleaned with brake kleen and put die electric grease on it. Problem was solved.
