I have a 1970 ford f-100 with a twin I beam front end. I really want to make a cheap 4x4 conversion so i bought a early 80's ford bronco is it possible to take the 4x4 system out of the bronco and install it in my truck?
Have you thought about mabey putting the f100 body on the bronco frame? Justa thought. Lots of measuring and odds are against you but thought i'd put it out there. More than likely the wheelbases will be way off. The concensious of most of the forums about swapping a 2wd to a 4wd have been just wait for a 4x4 frame to come your way. Good luck.
Anything is possible, but, it is not practical. I have owned two 80s Broncos and took one 100% apart.
The TTB is very hard to remove as a complete unit. Then to make it work/track correctly on the F-100, that is a tall order. A lot of custom work and welding will be needed. The only way to get at the rivets for the front part of the axle is to have the body off the truck and the engine out. Even then, a torch is about the only way to go.
Steering, frame, front suspension, and driveshafts will have to be seriously reworked. The 2wd and 4wd look the same but the guts are alot different to say the least
Find either a 67-77 4x4 chassis ( direct bolt on of your body) or a 77.5 to 79 ( for disc brakes, the good power steering etc)
With the newer frame you would have to re drill the bed floor bolts to match the wider frame( 77.5 up are 4 inches wider at the rear) as ford stopped pinching the rear of the frame rails.
Other than that.. it all works out nice. The frame length is a little goofy by 2 inches I think... so the bed wont be perfect against the back of the cab ( or rear wheel wells won't be dead on) your choice while drilling the bed holes.
ok thank yall but my next question is does anyone have a 77.5 to about an 86 f-150 short bed 4x4 that they would be willing to sell for a reasonable price that lives withen 300 miles of houston texas
ok well thanx for all of yalls help but like i said above i would like to find an older ford f-150 short bed reg cab 4x4 somewhere near houston texas. and would it be any easer to buy a bronco w/ a straight axle and put that on my truck
The disc brake front end was intoduced on a 150 with the first ones in 76 I think. I think the easiest way to swap the components would be to just do the whole front frame stub graft. Since any approach you take short of swapping your body on to a suitable frame, will require major fabrication anyway. I have seen a couple of pickup cabs put on a bronco frame. Then they cut the bed down to fit and they were way cool!!
how short would i have to go on my bed? What lengthening the bronco frame about 10 inches would that work. and ho would i go about making my bed shorter.
With a welder it is VERY easy to shorten a stepside bed. The only double wall part on the older ones is the top of the rail and it is easy to weld it because you an get at all sides. You can cut it with a sawzall.
All you have to do with the fenders is move them and redrill a few holes and fill in the old holes.
The one guy I knew actually shortened a wide bed. He had to take out some in front and behind the wheels and then just put the ends back on. If you shortened your stepside you could do it right in the middle behind the fender and have a minimum of cosmetics. Hammer welding would be the best but very few people know how to do thay anymore. If you can get someone to mig or tig it so it doesnt warp then you can grind it smooth and hopefully not need much bondo if any.
