I agree with cutting in the middle of the fenders, great idea!
The metal on the bed is fairly thin, I would only do an inch at a time (do an inch, skip three, do an inch, skip three, etc.) so the metal does not warp or pinch.
I would weld from inside the bed so most/all the grinding takes place where it cannot be seen. All you should see on the outside is a thin line where the parts meet and a blue streak on both sides about 1/4 an inch wide from the weld penetration.
alright yall well thats what i have decided to do unless anyone knows of a reason not to. I would still really like to see a picture of a truck made like this if anyone has one.
Im in the process of doing a 2wd to 4wd swap on my 67' . Im using a 85' so not sure it will all work but check out my web page...have 3 articles I scanned out of some 4wheel magazines might give you some ideas.
