04 auto trans issues.

my old body shop partner is using my 04 F350 4X4 5.4 auto trans the past three months while he is rebuilding the engine in his truck
they called today saying the od light was flashing, it will not shift over second gear, he drove it home 1/4 mile and added 3 quarts ATF.
i went over after work, and got these trans codes.
p0743
p01747
p0755
and these three emissions codes.
p0443
p0125
p0155

is it possible running it 3 quarts low did something to the solenoid pack causing the torque converter and solenoid codes, and am i looking at an expensive repair?
i know nothing about auto transmissions.

No, low fluid won't damage the solenoids. It can damage the pump and clutches, but not the solenoids.

You have three electrical codes. Look for a damaged wiring harness.

ok thanks Mark.
would a bad fuse cause this?
just thinking, ya know, check the easy stuff first.

Did you get her fixed up Tom? Just a bad wiring harness probably or did the solenoid pack,in fact fail? Suspect right off the bat, if I saw so many at once on the E4OD for example, I would to head right to the solenoid pack plug connector as my #1 suspect.

just got back from picking it up..
the bad:
4 quarts low on fluid.
half the fuses in the fuse box were blown.
power windows, power mirror, power door locks no longer work.
door key cylinder is broken.
key is broken in the ignition.
half the exterior lights no longer work.
there is a 2 inch hole in the aluminum diamond plate headboard on the flatbed body.
there is a 2 ft X 2 ft hole in the rear deck of the body, and a 6 inch X 2 foot hole in the center of the front of the deck.
no power steering.
gas gauge no longer works.
rear brakes not working, the rotors are completely rusted.
no coolant.
9000 miles since oil was changed.
3 of the tires had less than 10 lbs air in them. the fourth only had 14 lbs pressure.
i am pretty sure the trans is smoked.
it will move on flat ground but not very well.
if you hit a slope, it "shudders" like the clutches are shot.
the "shuddering" is also in reverse.
when it does the "shuddering" it feels like it is only running on 4 cylinders.
it will not move in drive. you have to start in first, then manually shift to second. when under power it shudders.
shift to third and it does nothing. almost like you are stepping on the brake.

The good:
the engine still seems good, and none of the body panels are dented.

ya try to be a good person and help someone out, and this is how you get paid back.

end of September.
i filled the tires up, 55 lbs front and 40 rear. put 2 gallons of antifreeze, and a quart of atf in the power steering. oil is surprisingly still clean, but that will get changed before i drive it.
and 12 fuses in the fuse box.
all lights but the interior light now work, but the driver side blinkers flash very fast like a bad bulb.
all three lights work though. front, rear, and LED on the body.
windows and locks work now too. i got the broken key stub out of the ignition.
gas gauge works too, the 40 gallon tank was just empty.
after doing all that, i tried putting it in drive while sitting in the driveway and it did not bog down, so i decided to give it a try by taking it to the gas station 1/4 mile away.
one of the blown fuses was for the transmission range sensor, another was for Body security module/4x4 module.
so i am hoping those two fuses combined with the low ATF level told the computer to not send any signals to the trans.
will see how it acts tomorrow when the engine and trans are cold.

Well you might be in luck again then.A worn, warm trans will act much worse than a worn, cold trans. The last E4OD in my F-450 I ran for all she was worth by installing a new pump and converter until the clutch material wore right out. When cold, the trans would still go but once up to temp, she would just slip.I was a bit too far from home with her for the last time,so after milking it home,I was sure to swap in the spare trans I had picked up earlier.Odds are if she's working fully warm today, you probably may have saved her just in time.

Last time you'll be lending a truck to that feller hopefully lol.

If it ends up shifting and driving good, you'll have to take a good look around.4 quarts since September means she must have a fairly decent leak somewhere. Be it a cooling line, front seal maybe or hopefully some loose pan bolts for an easy fix.

Yeah you would think a person would be appreciative and keep a loaned vehicle in tip top shape.I know when I was between trucks and dad lent me his truck,I made sure it came back full of fuel,no matter how much it had when I took it and bought him a few things for it that I knew he wanted like some chrome fender trim and mirrors for it.It helped me stay in business and make money and I showed my appreciation for it.Some guys though, you know, they just don't know about maintenance and stuff but I mean, still.Everyone who drives should know those basics and he wasn't good with turning a wrench, well no problem but take it to a shop for some maintenance then.Too bad.Hopefully it doesn't hurt a good friendship. Some things are well worth forgiving and just moving on but he'll just have to find his own truck haha.

the sad thing about it is he is a pretty decent mechanic, and world class body man.
but sniffing lacquer thinner for 40 years painting cars and trucks has left him with only one living brain cell remaining, and i think that one is half retarded.
he just does not think to do simple maintenance like opening the hood and looking at fluid levels.
that is why the shop truck is down, he ran it with no oil so many times it smoked the engine.

went for a short drive before changing oil and trans worked perfectly cold. so i think it was just the blown fuses and low oil level that gave me the scare.
oil was changed monday afternoon and i had a good look over the whole truck. right ball joints are a little loose, and left tie rod end is also a little loose. but neither are bad enough to worry about for a while, i probably will get 5 years before needing to replace them.
brakes are another matter. no rear brakes at all. fronts are working but not properly. i think the calipers are partially seized because the pads are not wearing evenly.
i am going to pull it back in the shop tomorrow and tear all 4 wheels and brakes off and replace everything.
while it is apart, i will also replace the bent steering damper that has been disconnected for the past 6 years.
once the brakes are done, then i will pull the bed and replace the floor with the red oak i got a few years ago, and finish hooking up the hydraulics to get the dump system working.
