Hello, I bought a 1984 Ford F150 w/a 302 and Automatic Trany(overdriive, drive and 1st gear) the Motor is orgi with 155K on it sounds great, idles smooth with a little smoke untill it warms up. But my maine problum is when I put it in drive it will barley go, the engine is reviing up but it just slowley puts along barley gaining any speed then when the engine sounds like it's going to go it down shifts to the next gear. It maxs out at around 40MPH. I have all ready replaced the Dist. Cap and Rotor changed the Trany Fluid and Filter. I need help any suggestions out there!!
What did the tranny fluid and the bottom of the tranny pan look like when you changed it?
If it was brand new looking and clean, I would suspect someone else already tried fixing it.
If it was brown, and there was a lot of metal in the bottom of the pan, the tranny doesn't look good. Fine metal particles are ok, but lots of larger chunks and stuff that looks like paper are not good.
You might also check the throttle cable adjustment. Here is some info.
