It has an Inline 6 that use to run great, unfortunately it does not now but that is another story another day. When I start the engine it runs and idles great but when I start to drive it after about 5 minutes into accelerating it starts to bog. Assumed a tune p would help so I replaced the distributor cap and button, spark plugs (wires were good), and EGR valve. Some problems, it does sound better and has better take off but still bogs and once pass the bogging it skips. I do not know if it is electrical, fuel or emissions but it is driving me nuts.Oh and when idling I can rev the motor and I get black smoke from the exhaust. Please help I need this van to work out of.

is the choke opening all the way when it gets warmed up ... air filter clean ? How about the exhaust ... Is there good pressure out the tailpipe ... Cat converter can get plugged ?
The 1984-1986 4.9L engine was controlled by a computer, even though it was not fuel injected. This system worked very well as designed, but in order to continue to do so, all sensors must be functioning and all vacuum hoses must still be attached. If not, the computer senses something is wrong and goes into a "safe" or "limp home" mode. When this occurs, gas mileage is awful and the performance is poor.
When I bought my current truck [1986 F150 w/4.9L], the first two tanks of fuel returned 9-11 mpg! My truck had been neglected and was in the "limp home" mode. It idled poorly, bucked on deceleration and had poor performance.
Check to see if all vacuum hoses are in place and that all unused ports on vacuum trees are capped. Check to see if there is still a MAP sensor, Oxygen sensor and temperature sensor in the thermostat housing. See if the carburetor is secure, as it can vibrate loose and cause a vacuum leak.
Does your carburetor have wires on the driver's side? Does the distributor have a vacuum hose near the base [vacuum cannister] or electrical wires near the base?
