Anyone had a 2.7 and 3.5 Ecoboost. My 2.7 hovers around 20mpg city mainly. I need to hand calculate it sometimes.

Did much better than my 3.5, but it was 4x4 crew cab lariat on 20s.

As I see it, the main problem with an EcoBoost in a Super Duty is how they are used. Many government and company trucks are idled for long periods, and/or just driven around the town limits. There is plenty of evidence of cylinder wash down and oil contamination with direct injection if the engine is not worked hard or long enough. I can only imagine the short engine life of a large displacement direct injection engine idling for hours on end and never leaving the town limits.

There are several reasons:

1) They would need to engineer an iron block version. Every HD truck engine has been iron for durability. The Ecoboosts are almost all aluminum.

2) Thermal management. Blowers produce a lot of heat. Fine when you're towing 13,000 or less, but the Super Duty is engineered for a whole different level of work. There's no reason to go to the expense and complexity of the required cooling system because.....

3) Most importantly, there's no pressure. The government and CAFE don't regulate HD fuel economy, but do for half tons. That is the reason the Ecoboost exists in the first place. It's the reason the 7.3L will never be in the F150. If the laws changed and HD trucks needed to meet fuel economy standards, you can bet on seeing a downsized engine in the Super Duty. Until then, the simplicity of a large naturally aspirated port injected iron block V8 will win out every time.

Fuel capacity sucked at 26 gallons in the Ecoboost especially towing, 48 gallon upgrade was NICE!
Expect 10-12mpg. Thats what I saw towing my 6500lb camper all summer with my 6.7. The difference for me was my prior tow vehicle 2008 tacoma got its lunch handed to it towing the camper and the F350 6.7 didn't know I hooked anything up to it. I went from stressed towing to not knowing the camper was behind me. Have a fun safe tow.

That is correct. The ecoboost has to dump fuel to cool the cylinders. So anytime I tow heavy with it the fuel economy is pretty bad

Also, with current technology, big cubes and boost = lots of gas under big load. Unloaded one might be just “OK” on fuel. In days gone by, the old 534 SuperDuty Ford and the 549 IH just about got gallons per mile when at work, but they were workhorses.

Worst part for me in my Ecoboost was the bounce when towing, so i upgraded the shocks and the 5100s up front screwed up the sway situation some how. My payload was crazy low at 1365lbs as well. Now at more than 5600lbs i'll never have to worry. I am looking forward to the "feel" of towing with the new truck.
