I'm trying to sell a core engine that was powering my wife's Volvo. It burnt up (just a little) to the point where I bailed on the project.
Potential buyer wants codes and I'm not sure what I am seeing. Yard told me it was a 2000 Explorer engine, has all the right pieces and worked fine till the fire. But can't make out what I am seeing on the block by the starter.
Maybe: L1SE, L19E, PT9E, P1SE , EB, and .... 8 D16 ? that looks like a date code perpendicular to the other stamping.
It was helpful but didn't seem to help me make sense out my mystery code? But it sure looks like the date would be 98 not 2000. Thinking not too much if any difference between the two. Thanks not sure how I missed that, I looked but did a crappy job of it. LOL

Thanks in advance.
That code's probably F1SE. 8-D-16 would be the date code which would be April 16 1998, which would be an Explorer motor as nothing else had a 302 after 1996 other than the Explorer/Mountaineer

something about the F1SE that doesn't jive with the date code. I suspect its just the charts on the link are not up to date?
Thank you!
Not sure what you're talking about. I've seen a couple-three F1SE blocks personally.
Just the info on the link posted by xlt4wd90 (the one I missed) doesn't break down F1SE , which I have no reason to doubt your suspicion,
F being 90's
1 being year, 91? can't be with a 98 date stamp. That is where I am confused but not concerned. It ran fine for hundreds of miles and many years with me thinking it was a 2000 MY.
Since my cam sensor is 2 wire and fuel rail only has one inlet visually (even grey injectors) all point to a 99 or newer from what I am told. Yet the date stamp clearly says 98.
Maybe someone before mixed and matched? Or more likely I'm not fully understanding what I'm reading.
.
I appreciate the reply's!

F1SE was the last version of the roller 302 block. E7TE heads were in production for 11 years. C8OE 302 rods were in production from 1968 to 1990. The 99 model year started in August of 1998
The casting numbers found on these engine parts tell you when the casting used to make the part was last updated, it does not tell you when the part was made. Ford did put tags or decals on assembled engines at one point but I think that practice was abandoned in the '70's or 80's and even if there was a decal/tag they often get removed and not reinstalled when service is done, so there often no way to know exactly when an engine was assembled.
You shouldnt need a specific year as there wasnt changes after 97 (not any big ones anyway). Assuming it is in fact out of an explorer, this should be pretty easy. On the corner of the head near the spark plug it should say GT (96-97)or GTP (97-01). Yours, 'should' be a P head, other identifiers are 4 bars on the "front" of the head, and GT40P under the valve cover. These heads were only used in 97.5-2001 explorers. If you do not have P heads, the GT40 heads have casting number F1ZE which is specific to explorer (only the number not the head). Chart at the bottom in case yours turns out not to be an explorer engine.
