Any input about this heater replacement job on a 70' F-100. Haven't had the pleasure of doing one with the under dash A/C components and since the coolant is evacuated now; like to replace as it seems like there is alot of resistance to the inlet and outlet hoses. Maybe stem off a later job this summer if it would affect the cooling ability. The truck hasn't seen regular service for some years and therefore suspect in my mind. Appreciate any tips or insight to getting this one changed out; and for fun, give it a difficulty level between 1 and 10. Will that heater core come out without disturbing the A/C under dash ?
So you've done one before? I can't see it being much harder, other then trying to fish the part of the heater box around the a/c box. The picture is hard to decipher what all the a/c looks like. Unscrew the nuts on the firewall side and see how easily the box drops off?
The real PITA is the factory underdash a/c-heat unit. It's a Chinese puzzle to dismantle to even get to the heater core in the back of the box. Been there, done that.
Haven't done this year truck Freight. Why I was asking. The 52' and the 88' were easy access so no worries.
So this is NOT the factory air, maybe that's a plus. Will take a closer look tonight and see about getting to the core.
Guess I was remembering some horror story about the A/C and heater core replacement, like you referenced.
Factory air must be the one with the little glove box in it?
thanks for the reply
If the heater core is indeed blocked; will this prevent or impede engine cooling? Thinking not since it would be like shutting the valve that opens flow.
It does not impede engine cooling. I had a blocked control valve and it ran fine before and after I replaced it. BTW I got the replacement heater control valve from a Ford dealer, still had them in stock!
Hey YT, thats a nice suprise when the dealer still has the part. 10-4 on the cooling question. Now wondering whether to put the original fan shroud back on the truck. It is a heavy fiberglass affair and might help the cooling on the truck. Of course its easier to leave it off, but probably safer to have it on there. Like to go to an electric fan set up sometime in the future.
Got the core in without major difficulties, but did manage to break some of the plastic surround on the A/C, darn it.
The replacement core has much better flow than the original core. I will be getting the original boiled out and checked for leaks and probably put it on the 69' Camper Special.
Appreciate the replies! On the bench for sprucing up. Flip side. Ready to re-install. Helps to take the glovebox out, of course. With the cover off and old core, as original.
