My old 77 351 would really kick down if you gave it gas, is that the passing gear?
I'm not to savvy on tranny's. Mine will not kick down, it will go into 2nd gear without a problem, but when your on the highway and want to pass there is nothing.
It just seems odd because I've had experience driving alot of trucks and most would kick down. Is it just the model of the truck and transmission or is there something wrong?
2nd gear is passing gear, check to make sure that your truck has the kick down linkage, it may need to be adjusted. It is located on the side of the accelerator cable or linkage, and goes down to the trans.
It might depend on your gearing and rpms too. My 87 never downshifts when I pass people, but with the torque it has and a 3.42 rear I think it's better off passing people in 3rd.
