On a C6 tranny, when you punch it and it kicks down to a passing gear, is that the same as second gear? I have a 1/2" carb spacer and the kickdown rod does not reach until I find time to modify it on my 78 4x4 351m. I am wondering if it is ok to just drop it into 2nd gear when I am going 50-55mph?
Iv'e seen people downshift into 1st going that fast. There tranny's didn't last that long but it should be safe. I had to do this with A t-bird because some hack was too lazy to put the kickdown back on after rebuilding the engine.
I dont have a kickdown on mine either so I do it manualy. It will not hurt anything, its doing the same thing as the kickdown. Also, as far as shifting into 1st going 55 mph,I thought that the C6 would not allow it to go in at that high of a speed. I know if I throw mine into 1st going that fast it just goes into 2nd. I mean, I wouldnt run out and test this on your truck but thats how I thought they all were.
OH yeah, it wasn't a C6 that they were doing this to, it wasn't even a ford. That must have been why it didn't last. My C6 does not shift into first until I am almost stopped.
it's ok but I suggest when you dou ,do it as if you were kicking into passing gear {in other words punch it enough to pass and come out of 2nd when rpms are just about to peak } i've done it many times
I would advise against it, That downshift rod works the downshift valve in the valve body. It's function is to increase line pressure so during periods of hard acceleration the affected clutches won't slip. make the rod longer so it will work. It probably won't hurt for a day or two, but we all know that a day or two usually turns into about six months. At that time your tranny may be cryin the blues!
Yes, it's ok to put it itno second gear at 60 mph. Do this, Go about 35 or so and drop into third, you sould notice that nothing happens until about 25 when the trans shifts down, regardless of the drive lever position. It knows it's own limits.
