Hi everyone, thanks for letting me join the forum.
I've always wanted an F series ever since i was young, but finding one here in Australia is proving difficult. I have finally found one. It's a 1992 F250, has x2 small rust holes in the roof but besides that very tidy. It has the 7.3 idi motor but the seller claims it needs new heads and a bottom end overhaul. My question is, for $5000AUD do you think this truck is way too expensive? Will rebuilding this motor blow the bank? I've rebuilt a Toyota diesel and worked on many others but have never ever even serviced a Ford F series.
Ford's fetch a premium down under, but I still think 5k is too high for something that needs a rebuild. With new heads and all the other machine work and parts you could hit up to 5k maybe more. So does this seem like a 10k truck to you?
Biggest thing would be does it actually need heads / rebuilt... No idea what going rate down there is, but 5k usually buys a decent running driving 4x4 crew cab around here. My machine work was ~$1200 which got me hot tanked, decked / resurfaced, new valve guides, exhaust valves, 3 angle valve job (recessed to account for decking), heads magnafluxed and assembled with new seals, align honed, new cam bearings, rods resized, and rings filed, that i can think of. Bearings and seals are cheap, but dunno what it would take to get them there. Biggest concern is if it actually needs rebuilt, boring a 7.3 is a gamble on whether or not you will end up with a pinholed cylinder, and sleeves are sorta spendy at ~$100 a hole.
