Just thought i'd mention i have a pair of 7.3 IDI heads fixin to get out of my way(goin to the dump) If anybody wants em thier free! One has a valve Guide broken at the top(dropped a valve sometime back) little rusty. You can have the short block too, if you pull it! Its still in the truck. Fixin to replace it with a 6.9 IDI. 7.3 rockers are a nice update to any 6.9 before 87.

turbill, you should add your location to your profile, that may help you find someone locally that might have the parts you are looking for, also, you won't be able to do pm's until you hit around 20-25 posts, and except for the classifieds section, there is supposed to be no buying or selling done on the forums. (Trying to say that most take it to PM as soon as they know a member is interested in something, and that right now you don't have that option yet unfortunately.)

And welcome to the sandbox!!!

I think the 6.9's had a problem with them breaking, the 7.3's are heavier built. I think. Oh and I found 2 of them, I will keep looking, if i find them all, you can have them.

The 7.3 rockers had a slot with a square retainer in them, that prevented them from twisting sideways. Occasionally a 6.9 rocker will 'twist' and it's hard on push rods and valve stems when it happens.

Royson thanks for look and if you find them I would be more then happy to take them off your hands and theres no rush at all I think my truck will be in pieces for a a little while longer

The weak point is where the rockers piviot.

What was in the 6.9 original design, would have been fine in a gasoline engine.

But the IDI diesel runs so long they just wear out.
When that happens the rocker can twist which bends push rods or even worst can knock the keepers out of the valve, which then falls into the cylinder and makes piston contact.

Like all motors, piston contact with a valve is not a good thing.

By 86 the original 6.9 engines were getting enough miles on them that the problem was evident, so the rocker design was change to a much stronger design.

how do i know if my rockers are good? Don't worry the loose ones are still yours, if i can find them all. My 6.9 is a motorcraft reman, surely it has the good ones in it, right?

So my 86 6.9 would have the "lesser" rocker arms. I will try to remember that if/when I have to do a tear down.
