Door Weatherstrip

Does anyone know what the name of the little piece of weatherstrip is that attaches on the front side of the back door, and matches up o the back edge of the front door when the door is closed? It’s on the front vertical edge of the back door and only runs about half way down the door. Can’t seem to find it on any parts diagrams, and it might be because it’s obsolete.

Thanks

chris

You are probably referring to the vertical piece on either door with the plastic push fasteners?
These appear to be the part numbers I ordered when I replaced mine.

Just curious if you got new plastic push fasteners when you replaced yours, do you happen to have the part # for them? I ordered the parts but am guessing the old pins won’t be re-useable.

thanks,

chris

Could someone post some pics of the weatherstrips on the rear doors and lift gate? I think some of mine is missing!

There is a one piece body gasket which the liftgate "sides, top, barn door sides and bottom" seal to. the barn doors have their top seals contacting the interior bottom forward facing of the liftgate, and a vertical seal between the barn doors. Through 2000 there was an additional seal under the center of the liftgate covering 90% left to right which contacted the top of the barn doors, this was deleted 2001 and beyond.

Are you referring to the rubber part that rubs against the clear vinyl on top of the barn doors?

Does anyone know how to remove that vinyl?

This stuff has to go! How do I remove it without damaging the paint?

This deleted seal may be what I am seeing mounting holes for in the bottom of my lift gate.

3m makes a rubber wheel that mounts in a drill motor. It's like a gum eraser. It should remove it without damaging the paint. Should be able to pick one up at an auto body supply place if your FLAPS doesn't carry it.

Yes the chaffing on the 3M paint protection film is from the deleted gasket, replaced by a flat smaller strip in the middle. Which on mine is rubbing into the fiberglass door. The rubber rotary remover is pretty good mentioned after your post, you can also try a heat gun carefully with plastic scrapers, and maybe a little goo-gone, polishing/buffing may be needed after.

I have used these for many projects, and they work well. Harbor Freight sells them too in their auto body section.

I haven't specifically removed that exact piece of trim tape but I have removed LOTS of trim tape. I like the rubber wheel the best for most stuff. Sometimes plastic razor blades work good. Sometimes careful use of a single edge razor works but you can get into the paint pretty easy that way. Heat to soften the tape works good but you have to be careful using heat on fiberglass. A hair dryer may be safer than a real heat gun.

Romoved that ugly vinyl!

Today I went to Harbor Freight and picked up some of those plastic chisels, some WD-40, and started to work. First I tried the heat gun and it seemed to work but only sort of. Then I tried WD-40 to see if it would eat into the vinyl but it's effect was minimal to worthless. Then I broke out the 3M Eraser. The 3M Eraser seems to work pretty good until I got a butt load of mess for such a little area. Back to the heat gun, and it worked very well once I got the hang of it. The trick was to get it hot enough but not burn the paint, and do small areas at a time. This job took me about 4 hours of careful heating, scraping and hand polishing with swirl remover.
Did I mention these barn doors came from a different truck? Yes mine had glass damage so I found these at a bone yard and swapped them in. I got lucky as they were the same paint code eliminating the need to repaint. I have so far $500 invested in new doors and supplies as opposed to a bodyshop quoted me $1500 to fix the glass and repaint. Savings + $1000.00

Thank you to those who provided the ideas of the plastic scrapers and the 3M Eraser wheel including Mr 01_Excursion,

To finish it off, I think I'll put some black vinyl so it covers the whole top of the barn doors hiding the imperfections from the past 20 years. Anyone have a better idea?

Wow, that turned out nice, I'll remember to post a pic of my doors and the chaffing caused by the newer style mini center gasket instead of the long one. I actually need filler on my doors, I have already adjusted the black handle trim on the glass when I put a new one on. I too want to remove the 3M film, but thought about going with a hyper thin sculpted stainless overlay to prevent wear to the doors again.

where would you find stainless with adhesive backing that thin. I searched everywhere and could only find stainless tape, 2” wide max. Every other search result was vinyl. If it’s gonna be vinyl, I’ll go matt black. I would prefer stainless for durability sake.
Anyone know where to source ultra thin adhesive backed stainless steel sheet?
