Lightbulb Steering....again

I copied this from an older thread from 2010 or so. Back then there were a few of the sector shaft bushings available. Now there there are not any left. At least that I've been able to locate. I did find a couple references though that indicate the size of the bushing as follows:

Inside Diameter: 1 1/8
Outside Diameter: 1 1/4
Length: 1 3/8

What material are these bushings made of? Would bronze be an acceptable substitute? I found this site with similar size bronze bushings: https://www.bronzebushings.com/cb-18...od-x-1-1-2-oal. They are a 1/8" too long but that can be fixed.

Thoughts / opinions?

Thanks for any feedback

All the internal steering gearbox parts are obsolete, but all can still be found at Ford Dealers/obsolete parts vendors.

The usual cause for slop in the gearbox is the sector shaft bushing (B8A3576A = 1961/64).

There's only one, it's the same as passenger cars, and it's a "weak sister." By the time 40,000 miles rolls around, it's time for a new one.

If it were my truck, I'd just replace the bushing, the sector shaft seal (C7OZ3591A), and housing gasket (C3AZ3581A).

The costs for these three parts will be minimal, and this is a simple gearbox to work on. If additional parts are required, they can be found and are EZ to install.

Try this place for parts. They had a rebuilt box for a manual steer 81 F-100 that I needed. Manual steer that year was rare.

Bronze is a good bushing material, used on almost everything. I'm curious did you wipe out the bushing twice? Or did I read that wrong?

I'm not sure of the condition of the bushing yet, but am in the process of restoring the truck. I have the steering column out and am getting ready to tear into it over the weekend to see what I have. The truck has not been driven since at least two previous owners. The last person to tear the column apart removed part of the 3 on the tree shifter and replaced with floor shift. On reassembly it appears that some parts were left out Shift lever, bushing or bearing at to top of the column, etc. Just looking for options as I rebuild the column and what of the steering box that needs it. Just turning the steering wheel seems really smooth and I didn't feel a lot of play, but with lots of wiggle at the top of the shaft. I have everything totally off frame and starting to build it back up.

You’ll have to set bearing preload and sector shaft mesh. A National 472560N seal is better than the one that comes in the kit. The bearings are Chinese.
”00” manual steering box grease is available from Eckler’s.

So this 72 - 92 jeep kit fits the '64 F100 Steering Gear box? That's amazing. I'll see if one of my local crown automotive dealers has one to compare when I get it apart.

Thanks.

Not really, the unofficial moniker for AMC is "All Makes Combined".
