Miami so I know hot. strangely my ac works fine but not the heater. There was a junked 350 we PMed about in WPB. It actually had the rear a/c parts, I was thinking of grabbing them, but I wasn't sure if rear a/c means second condensor, evaporator, etc. or is it just pipe air to the back. Do you know?
The rear A/C is a second evaporator core with fan right behind the driver seat. At least on mine. Additional high/low pressure lines pump freon to the rear evaporator.
Oddly enough I completely eliminated the rear A/C from my 2005 E350 Club Wagon---it was on its way to becoming a work truck where heat is needed but not A/C. Living in Ohio our winters are cold enough that I want tools, supplies and parts to be warm when I'm working.
The rear A/C does have a thermostatic expansion valve near the rear evaporator rather than the orifice tube for the front. I believe the compressors are the same with or without rear A/C but the refrigerant and oil charge do increase with rear.
The biggest difference in the plumbing near the compressor is a different receiver/dryer and the high side hose from the condenser have T-fittings connecting the compressor to the rear evaporator. The real challenge to adding rear A/C is running the refrigerant lines to the rear evaporator. You'd want to find a local specialty hose manufacturer who could fabricate the necessary lines. Sadly factory plumbing is prone to leaking due its ultra-cheap aluminum tubing used.
That's a bit different from the '92 and later E-Series where the evaporator and fan are behind the left/drivers side rear wheel. That configuration looks like this:
Heater core towards the front of this case, evaporator bottom rear. Full Club Wagon trim includes overhead headiner air outlets, floor mounted heat registers. Function and air flow is determined by the Function Control on the dash board--through the ceiling vents for A/C, floor flow for heat. Neither temperature can be modulated like in the front systems--fan speed sets the rear relative comfort level.
