I think my 96 ranger engine has kicked the bucket. I was contemplating replacing the engine and wanted to get some thoughts from anyone who has done that. Is it worth the trouble? I have a 96 4.0 4x4 extended cab xlt. I've found one used for about a grand with 94k on it and I've gotten a quote for about 2k for a rebuilt. I've never done this before so I don't know what to look for. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated
At only 94k I'd suggest dropping the motor in as is, it might outlast your truck if it's been well maintained. I did the used motor swap in the '04 Ranger we have... got the truck with no engine, it's been solid ever since.

Hi Conanski,
Thanks for the input. I've got several options on a used one they range from 89k to 94k. They're all just under a grand. They have a 5 year 50k mile warranty on them. I've never purchased an engine let alone a used one. Are there a lot of horror stories out there? Are there any recommended companies to deal with? I'd like to keep the truck. I've had it for 19 years.
I went the used engine route on the 3.0L I recently replaced in my B3000. I think I got a very high quality engine at 89k, I made sure it was not from a car that was totaled in a front end collision, I even got the carfax from the VIN.
Used a 3.0 vulcan long block from a Taurus, as it was $250 vs the $1000+ going rate for the same ranger engine.
I purchased from LKQ's ebay account and arranged a local pickup. Would gladly do business with them again.
same motor. Except you will need to reused your front cover for accessories, pan etc. Basically use the heads/bottom end and swap everything else over. I have been told that the head gaskets are different because the water pump flows water differently. In my case i went ahead and replaced the head gaskets/bolts (and oil pump and water pump) because i wanted a completely fresh motor.
It is in fact the same motor, have maybe 500 miles on it since I dropped it in last Sunday. I'm told the cam is different, didn't bother to swap mine though. Timing cover is identical, no changes there, didn't touch it.
None of this however helps the OP, I was more stating my experience with a used motor, but only time will tell how it holds up.
