P20BA And a question.

On a trip home for Christmas this last week, I made the mistake of filling my def tank up at the pump, and I mustve filled it too full.

I now have a P20BA code that comes back within a few key cycles after I clear it. I've cleared it 3 times now and it keeps coming back, so I'm sure I did damage to the heater by filling the def tank full and letting it freeze. Temps overnight after I filled the tank dipped below 10 F.

Now for my question, I have no means of getting the def heater replaced before I need to head back home 250 miles pulling an enclosed trailer. Forecast for tomorrow shows its going to be around 16 F, so hopefully not cold enough to freeze the def, but I'm still concerned.

My question is, what are the risks of driving home like this? Say the def tank does freeze, can't thaw, and I don't get adequate def flow. Will I go into limp mode or get shut down on the side of the road. Odds are good that I'll be driving on crummy roads in poor conditions with a 1 year old in the back. I have a Bluetooth dongle and can clear codes as needed.

I made it home after clearing the code before I left, but the question remains. Can I continue to drive the truck in cold Temps or will I get stuck in limp mode?

It will eventually tell it you that speed is going to be limited and then eventually unuseable.

So yes as long as you local I would drive the truck.

Any chance you fall under the extended warranty for the item?

It could be that your filling did not cause the problem since you were driving at the time.

Well, I filled the tank plum full, drove 100 miles, then parked the truck overnight. Not sure if that 100 miles lowered the tank enough to prevent damage or not.

I don't believe I fall under the extended warranty. My truck is a 2015 with 86k miles. I do however, have an extended service plan that I bought with the truck in June. That plan is *supposed* to cover fuel system components, not sure about emissions. Guess we'll see if they want to cover it or not.

As for the limp mode, I was under the impression that limp mode won't come on unless the def actually freezes and isn't able to cut down NOx. So as long as it's above 12F the def should still flow and do its job even without the heater. Maybe this is incorrect.

I have been getting the same code for about month now. Just waiting for the right time to have the issue taken care of since I have the ESP and I don't feel like crawling under the truck to do the work. The issue is the reductant heater for the DEF. It could simply be that the connection has come loose or your heater is going bad. Heaters do that. There are a couple of Youtube vides out there about replacing the the heater. It's not a difficult job. Basically drop the tank and replace the heater. It will taken a couple of hours to do is all.

Check batteries

I got the same code, had to reset it several times. Was told to check batteries for low voltage. Batteries were at 60 % and tester said to replace. Replaced them both and no more codes.
