1998 E350 5.4 2v stalling at cold start
I have a 1998 E350 5.4 2v stalling at cold start-up. I read through some posts here and on other forums and I narrowed down the problem to the IAC valve. I pulled it off today and cleaned it with brake cleaner. It started right up and did not hesitate or stall.
I am writing this to assist other people who experience difficult cold starts.
In the last 9,000 miles, I have replaced the DPFE sensor, MAF, air filter, fuel filter, spark plug, coil packs, and wires. The van hit 100,000 miles and the previous owner passed the buck to me. I knew this going into the deal.
I ordered a new MotorCraft IAC from eBay. I don't want to fool around cleaning the IAC every time it starts acting up. I think the unit in my van is the original. I will update this post after driving it for a month.
I am impressed with how smooth this 5.4 l 2v engine runs. It has quirks. Compared with owning and maintaining the Ford 6.0 diesel in my previous van, it's much easier. Cleaning the IAC took less than 30 minutes from start to finish. It was full of black carbon and it did not look much cleaner after soaking it in brake fluid. As previously mentioned, I will replace it with a new MotorCraft IAC when it arrives.
The diesel van averaged about 17 mpg and the gas 5.4 van averages 14 mpg. Diesel fuel sells for $3.73 a gallon, while gasoline sells for $3.14. Driving 1000 in the diesel van would cost $219.41 and $224.28 in the gas van. The cost of fuel consumption is the same. I understand that diesel is less expensive in other parts of the country. The cost of repairing and maintaining the gasoline van is less. For example, a simple repair like removing and replacing the alternator in the gas van is 30 minutes compared to 4 hours in the diesel van.
