High fuel consumption!

I have a 02 f150 5.4l 2v w/225,000 miles and I just did the timing chains, oil pump, water pump, plugs, coils, injectors, crank sensor, cam sensor, rad hoses and belt. I was getting a lean code multiple times a day. So I did a timing chain job on it now no codes but it seems to be sucking the fuel. Any thoughts?

Leaking?

I’m not sure where I would check first. There is no visible fuel leaking.

A partially stuck open injector, but you would get rich codes. Check and see if you IAT (intake air temp) is working correctly as this can make mess with the fuel trims as well as the CHT (cylinder head temp)

How is engine power, lame or strong?
Original exhaust or has it been changed at some point?

First, thank you for the reply. I’m not getting any fault codes, the engine runs strong. There is a flow master muffler single in dual out and dumped before the rear axle.

Ok, quick update!😳 Now 2years later, engine runs strong. My high fuel consumption has stopped. I have 219,xxx miles on the pickup now, engine runs very strong but I seem to be losing a fair amount of oil with no leaks and no smoke. I’ve heard other people talk about oil loss with same no visuals. But haven’t heard any fixes. Dose anyone have any ideas as to what might be the cause? I will stay on top of this thread this time. Just a refresher I’ve replaced all at the same time, timing chains/guilds/tensioners, oil pump, injectors, oil change, air filter, water pump and various sensors. I had a high fuel consumption problem after I did this work but that stopped (on its own), I think when I did the work it was in the wintertime here in north central Montana and very cold out so I think 1 or 2 injectors were sticking. That’s just my opinion, I thank the people who responded to my original thread! Love this pickup, it runs strong! Just a month ago I hauled a 1958 Cadillac to a action and the pickup handled it like a dream!

The way it should be, Ford hauling a GM! 🤣

If you're losing oil without leaks, then the only explanation is that it burning it. That means you need either new valve seals or a valve job or a ring job.

I thought the same thing but I also thought that I should of seen some smoke though! I’m going to pull a couple of plugs and check them. Thanks for the response!👊

Another known cause of a no visual leaking oil system is a failed PCV assembly. These engines have been known to lose oil between changes due in large part to their design and the very thin recommended viscosity. If the PCV is new or changed it would still be a good idea to pull a spark plug to two looking for signs of oil fouling. Here's an article I've found helpful over time: Reading Spark Plugs

Thank you!

Thank you JWA for your response. I think I changed the pcv valve but not 100% sure I’ll check that also. Thanks again!

Like JWA posted a bad PCV valve could be culprit. But these engines start to consume oil once they get up there in mileage. Normal oil consumption according to FoMoCo is 1qt for every 900 miles, one of our 400k+ mile 5.4 trucks consumes that much oil with zero visible smoke, and the inside of the exhaust pipe tip is so clean that you can see the bare metal with no carbon build up. Just keep up checking the oil at least every 1k and you should be good.
I also noticed that when WOT and 3.5k+ RPM on a daily basis in city driving on a 11K truck, oil consumption can be more than what the manufacturer considers normal
