Recently had this issue with my parents truck that I had to figure out. Sharing this in case it helps someone in the future.
2005 F-150 4.2L 156,000 original miles. Good old 5 speed.
Instrument cluster randomly loosing power while driving. No mileage, all gauges at 0, then a few second later back to normal. It would remain running. Radio would work die sometimes and others no. Checked and cleaned all grounds, no change. Replaced applicable fuses, no change, checked ignition switch, check OK. Replaced instrument cluster, expensive and no change. Replaced relay that supplied power and that made a change to how often. It turns out to be the re-manufactured alternator they had put on it when the old one died. Voltage Regulator was pushing above normal constantly. My guess is the relay for power to the instrument cluster was overheating. Since there is an additional accessory delay relay that get power from the instrument cluster, any related item would die like radios or power accessories if so equipped. Replaced alternator under warranty and hasn't done it since.
16.5 volts constantly, no drops, no variations at idle regardless of what was drawing current according to my meter. Battery was charged. I'm not sure what it was at load going down the road, I kept slipping off the front bumper while on the highway trying to check .
I do not know what amperage was being pushed, when taken back to the store from whom it was bought they said it was defiantly out of spec.
I had the same issue on an Oldsmobile about 11 years ago. Turned out to be one of the battery posts inside the battery was loose. The dealership never could get it to produce the issue even when they kept it for a week. I didn't find it until I had to replace the battery a few months later.
The battery was under the back seat so no one ever thought to check it.
