I have a 96 f350 460 auto trans the E40OD. I'm looking to tow my 32ft toy hauler
. My question is my truck currently has three trans coolers on it. it has an inline tube one, and two in front of the radiator one has a fax one a switch. I have been told these are doing more harm then good. I would like to get some opinions, and some pics and details of what you guys are running and towing

Why do you have three coolers on it and not just one that is rated for your application?

Yes, an additional cooler is a good idea. Heat kills auto transmissions. As mentioned you want a gauge to see what the temp actually is since you also don’t want it to run too cold either.
Truck had two when I purchased it, I was only aware of one. the one in front of the radiator with the fan. I added another because it was still getting hot when towing and idling. So I added another, now I am thinking maybe they are causing more hard then good. I do have a temp gauge the trans averages 150-180 depending on driving and eternal temps when towing I was seeing 220 and a little higher.
Does anyone else have any experience with the one posted above?

Has it ever had a tuner on it? Can those trucks even be "tuned"? A co worker had a 2000 F350 Superduty 7.3, automatic, with a tuner, he pulled horse trailers with it and every time he would stop and cut the engine off the transmission would puke fluid out the fill tube, 1 to 2 quarts, depending on how hot it was. He said he never overfilled the transmission fluid, just replaced what came out and checked it on the dipstick. He also had an aftermarket cooler. Don't know if he ever found the source of the problem. My 2001 F250 Superduy with a 7.3, automatic transmission, never had a tuner on it, pulled a 36 foot fifth wheel with no problems.
what temps should I be worried about? Any recommendations on what trans cooler to get, is the one posted above any good?
I do not think the truck has been tuned its the 7.5L, but I'm sure the previous owner didn't disclose everything. I have had way more problems than expected.
trans doesn't feel like it has any issues, it goes hard into second under heavy accelerations but that is all.
You shouldn't go above 220°F for more than a half hour at a time. If you hit 250°F find a safe place to stop and idle or fast idle in park or neutral to cool the trans. DO NOT shut off the engine when the trans is too hot, that will cook it.

There is no reason to run hot, keep it cooled at 200 degrees for max life. I have run them hot... and they don't last.
Well the truck made it. I went from Temecula Ca to Quartsite AZ towing the trailer in the pic. We only were able to go up the big grades at 35 but the rest was smooth sailing. climbing the trans temp started to climb and got just into the 200 range so I wasn't worried. I thinking about getting the trans cooler off a 6.0 and replacing it with the three I have. I'm worried towing in summer will be an issue when its not 50 degrees outside blowing on the truck. Any thoughts on this?
Has anyone switched to electric fans any recommendations?
Also I am running 37 inch tires on the 5 inch lift with 5.13 gears front and low. I noticed at 55 the truck is barely pulling 2000 rpms and is rather sluggish, when I get into the 60mph range it is around 2400 and the truck is running great. Is there anything i can do to change this without changing the ring and pinion to 5.33, I don't really want to go that low.
Thanks for all the info on here, you guys have been great.
