1995 F150 5.0 MASS/ 4R70W to 1995 5.8 SB/ E40D

Hello,

First post and I found a few.. well, more than a few, threads on this but couldn't find my exact scenario and wanted to make sure before I started something I shouldn't have.

I have two 1995 F150s: a single cab long box with a 5.8W Speed Density and a E40D (my current truck) and an extended cab short box with a 5.0 MASS and a 4r70w. Both 4x4 and both auto.

I need the extended cab for the kiddos so that is the truck i am keeping, my plan is to put the 5.8 and E40D in the ext cab and the 5.0/4R70W back in the single cab the my friend is going to purchase from me.

MY TWO QUESTIONS:
1 - Will I need to change the entire wiring harness or just the PCM?
2 - Is it worth the swap or should I Just keep the 5.0 and 4R70W.. It will be lifted 6" with 4.46 gears and ARBs front and back. In the cold months here in Utah it is a daily driver and I tow the occasional 4 wheeler trailer.... From what I have read the 351 and E40D are much better units....

The powertrain wiring on these two trucks is very different and pieces of the two cannot be mixed so you would have to change all of it to complete your plan as described, this will not be a plug and play exercise. The easier version would be to leave the transmissions where they are and just swap the motors, in that scenario none of the wiring in either truck is moved you just disconnect it all right on the motors and swap them. This will require another pair of flexplates because engine balance is different and these transmissions use flexplates with different offset, but that is it. I like the 4R70w better than the E4OD, technically it is a lighter duty trans but the E4od seems to be much more problem prone.

thanks!! So I will keep the trannys where they are at. Will I need to change the PCM for the motor swap because the 5.8 is speed density and the 5.0 is Mass?

Also the transfer cases have the same model number and appear physically the same but one has a sticker that says 2AB and the other says 5AH. Can’t figure the difference....

If you keep the transmissions where they are and swap the engines, you don't need to swap the PCMs. You need to create new PCMs.

Now you will have a 5.8L/4R70W. Ford doesn't have a PCM to operate that combination, so you will need to invent one. I do believe there was a 5.0L/E4OD, so you could find one of those somewhere.

Do not try to operate a 4R70W with an E4OD PCM, or vice versa. You will destroy both transmissions in a very short time.

No no need for new PCMs, the 5.0 MAF version will operate a 5.8 just fine and same for the other combo, the fueling requirements for these two are close enough it won't matter.

Thanks guys!! So I’m going to leave the trannys in place as suggested.

now I’m going back and forth about the motor swap... the truck is a daily driver in the winter but only 12 miles a day, no highway. 6 miles to and from work. In the warm months it sits in the garage unitll we go camping, sometimes long drives from Utah to Northern Wyoming. Very little towing, a 4 place 4 wheeler trailer once a month. Do I go to the effort to swap to the 5.8 or just keep the 5.0? Running a 6” lift, 4.88 gears, Dana 60 rear and 35” tires. Would I get better mileage with 5.0? Currently get about 12 with the 5.8....

No the 5.0 will not get better gas milage with that setup and you will miss the torque of the 5.8.
