Need Battery Cable Help on Ole Blue: PROBLEM SOLVED!
It was a beautiful day out today so I decided to tackle replacing the battery cables on Ole Blue. Got everything back in the right places with new motorcraft cables. But when I try to hook up the negative cables the engine tries to turn over. I'm thinking the starter solenoid is stuck (just replaced the starter a few months ago with a lifetime warranty one). Read this can be caused by trying to start the truck with low batteries, which I did before realizing the cables were as bad as they were.
I welcome any thoughts you all have as I miss driving the old boy.
Disconnect the starter solenoid cables on the fender The hook up the batteries. It's not an '02 or '03 correct?
It is a 2001.
Here is a list of what I have tried:
Disconnected wires from solenoid on fender, still does it.
Disconnected small wire from starter, still does it.
Disconnected small wire from starter and from fender solenoid, still does it.
Pulled fuses and re-installed, still does it.
Tapped on starter solenoid, still does it.

So with both large wires off the fender solenoid and not touching it still turns the starter when you touch a negative cable?
Well your getting power to the starter from some where. The block is the ground. Need to trace the cable attached to the starter back till you figure out where the power is coming from. Only time you should have 12 volts on the hot wire from up top to the starter is when the fender solenoid is energized. If you have both the large wires off the fender solenoid there should be no power at the starter.
Suspect some cable is hooked up wrong but hard to say which one not being there.
I guess the new cable assembly could have been built wrong? Wouldn't be the first time.
If your starter has the round solenoid then i suspect the large battery cable is some how making contact with one of the other post on the starter. If it is the round solenoid ther are 3 post on, Large for teh battery cable, Med for the wire from the motor and the small the trigger wire from the starter relay on the fender.
If it the square denso style solenoid it's a little harder to do this.
I knew I had to replace the battery cables on my truck. So sometime ago I ordered the negative cables, not knowing that the positive cable was as bad as it was...it was bad.
When I realized it was bad I ordered the heavy duty motorcraft one from Summit Racing. It isn't a bad deal at $135.00 plus shipping...
Installation wasn't all that hard. Took about two hours to remove all three cables and install the new ones. What I didn't notice was the starter end of the positive cable had tabs on it that were closing the circuit on the starter solenoid...
So this morning I took the starter off and noticed the tabs. I had to go to O'Rielly anyways because I needed a fix for the stripped starter housing hole (used a helacoil for that and it worked great) so I decided to swap out my lifetime warranty high torque starter since I didn't know if the solenoid was stuck or not.
Before I hooked it all back up I broke the tabs off the wires...PROBLEM SOLVED!
Thank you all so much for your help and ideas. You guys on here are the best at helping get my mind working in the right direction.
P.S. I've never heard this truck crank over and start so fast as it does with the new cables! HOLY COW
