engine noise -- pulley question!

76 F250 with a 390 (I think haha) FE
So while I was out messing with the valve cover gasket, I started it up and was going to get a video of the noise its making, when I noticed the pulleys seem really close together, and like it may be possibly the source of the noise it is making? And if this isn't right, how do I fix it? I plan on having my husband look when he gets home and I am going to be putting new belts on it, as these are just worn out anyhow. Which I guess may help.. I am not really sure.

Link to the video, it didn't seem like it wanted to upload, so hopefully this works: https://www.dropbox.com/s/akjebhhwed...52155.mp4?dl=0
Here is a picture of the pulleys as well:

very possible there hitting , thats way to close ,,perhaps some pictures of more of the front of engine , seems like maybe wrong pulleys as it sure looked like they were hitting in that video,,you can remove belt and see if it quits and spin the pulleys to make sure all the bearings are good on the water pump and anything else that spins freely,,but if thats upper pulley is water pump it may have a worn bearing

This is the best I could get tonight. We are going to pull the belts and see. That would make me pretty happy if it is the source of the noise.

what size is the engine ? Start it with belt off and see if noise goes away , it will at least determine the noise is in that area and not the engine knocking

Oh I forgot to add that to the first post. I will do that. I was told 390. It has the FE engine.

It could be correct pulleys as I am no expert on a 390 but it could still be bad bearings in the water pump allowing to much movement , starting it with belt off will help determine , just dont run it very long of course

My ‘74 with a 360 has makes a similar noise that I was able to track down to the mechanical fuel pump using a broomstick held up to my ear. It’s a simple way to listen in on what’s going on in certain areas. Just watch out for the fan!

Sage words of advice! I can't tell you how many times ti stuck my stethoscope too close to something spinning (thankfully not the fan, but the results are still painful) and the noise, was tremendous! To paraphrase Bill Cosby...

And speaking of fans, I don't think it's been mentioned lately, but it's still (even after all these years) a good idea to not line yourself up in the plane of the fan while working on a running engine. Friend had his '66 Bronco fan lose a blade not long ago and luckily he was not standing in line with it.
But the hood and power steering pump weren't so lucky!

That is definitely good advice and something to always think about! I was actually standing off to the side but was holding my phone in there to get the video. We have to find the top half of a shroud as well, since this one is broken.

Going to see what happens when I pull the belts tomorrow. my fingers will be crossed that is what is making the noise.

We do have a mechanics stethoscope but it may not be long enough to reach every where.

Unfortunately it isnt the pulleys hitting, still makes the noise when the belts are off. I used the mechanic stethoscope and it seems the fuel pump makes the loudest noise, so I think I'll swap it and see what happens

if it is fuel pump , that is easier than replacing the water pump , so hopefully that cures it
