The ‘denso’ from autoparts is NOT the same as the one from CNC Fab.
Get the real denso starter and never buy another starter. Rebuild it yourself forever. Mine needed new contacts ($30 and 10 minutes) after 180k miles and is over 280k Miles now. Eventually it will need bearings and someday the motor may need replaced. All easy to DIY.
Meanwhile, it spins the engine faster and draws less amps than the other options for our trucks.
Ive put lots of these in and mine is the only one that needed service (10yrs later).
A drop of blue Loctite on the starter bolts is a good idea.
It looks like the solenoid case for that genuine Denso is a part of the that large casting there, whatever you would call it.
There's a video out there that shows how to change without pulling tranny all the way out. He just slid it back enough to get to bolts, rolled the engine over wrenching on front pulley, so he could get to each bolt as he turned motor over.
Cold time of year to be crawling under one, if you don't have a garage.
I may be wrong but don't think ground teeth on a fly wheel are the end of the world. If you get a good starter that is engaging properly that flywheel should still work.

That center tooth is almost all the way through...
i know i'm over a month late to this thread, but i thought i cold add my .02$ as well. so i've been dealing with a grinding starter over the last year or so.. sometimes it grabs and cranks with little problem when others it takes a minute for the teeth to really grab. a few weeks ago it got to the point where i put in a reman'ed starter and within a couple of days, had the problem again but even worse. had to rotate the flywheel by had for 'clean teeth' and eventually the truck would start... anyhow, one morning i couldn't even get the truck started. realized it wasn't the starter, it was the lack of teeth to grab. so i picked up a new flywheel from RA and a authentic dense starter from the shop up in defiance, ohio and O.M.G. my truck starts so buttery smooth it's ridiculous. i can't believe how easy it starts and how clean it sounds while doing it. all those OEM starters just seem to squeal and grind and struggle when i think about it.. i've never pulled the trans, but i opted to leave my xfer case connected and after shaft and plate removal, just manhandled the trans/xfer case and it wasn't a big deal. stoked to have a running daily driver again.. working on posting a couple initial photos for ya.. cheers all.
I'm so sorry I didn't update this thread. New flexplate fixed it, and the old one had a huge crack in it where it bolts up too so it was a blessing in disguise!
