My 99 has always had a long crank to start issue especially after being parked. Well today I was able to put a gauge on the fuel rail, this is the results. 0 psi to start. KOEO, needle jumped to 5psi then went back to 0. Begin cranking and psi slowly goes to 20 and the engine fires. Once running it had 30-35psi. Shut the truck off and the psi bled back to 0. If you cycle the key, on off on off a few times the psi builds then starts right away when cranked. Truck runs great otherwise. So I am figuring a new fuel pump. I ordered a Motorcraft pump/sender assembly and have that on the way. Any words of wisdom?
does your truck have a pressure relief ( or regulator) on the fuel line near the brake booster.... Mine leaked thru and would not hold pressure in the rail...
Update: I was able to install a new Motorcraft fuel pump assembly and now it starts within seconds! woo hoo!! The R&R wasn't too bad at all. A couple things I ran into, the vapor hoses were really dry rotted so snip. So much easier to remove off the barbed fittings when the tank is out of the way. Then I couldn't unclip the vapor pressure sensor wire. Fortunately the wire was long enough for the tank to rest on the ground and rotate out so I could access the assembly. Trip to NAPA for a couple feet of 7/16" fuel vapor hose and a fuel filter and I was back in business.
