front end locker removal

i've got a 95 f250 4wd that had a locker already installed when i bought it. What will it take to remove it? How do I find out what gears go back in the differential? Would everything I need come with a rebuild kit?

Depends on what kind of locker it is. Some types, such as the Aussie Locker, you just pull the parts out of the middle of the carrier and put everything back together.

In any case, you will need to pull the gearset from your front TTB to work on it. If you will do that, then you will know what you have in there.

If you have a factory LS or some setup like that, then you will need a new carrier and that would not come in a "rebuild kit". You do not have to change the gears tho for any of this unless you would like to source a used carrier to just swap out, in that case you need to get the same gears as you have. What is the axle code on your door VIN tag?

If you do change the carrier and/ or gears you would need to set backlash and pinion depth.

Find someone that wants to upgrade to a front locker, and then give them your front locker for free if they will pay a mechanic to swap between trucks. You'll get an open front diff and won't have to do anything.

I’m curious why you want to take it out in favor of an open differential?

i live in a snowy area and i'd like to be able to leave the hubs locked and be able to shift into 4wd when i need to without getting out of the vehicle. driving with the locker engaged seriously affects the steering as speed increases --to where i would not want myself or my wife drive it while it is engaged.

Yeah, I had a Lock Right in the front axle of an F-150 for one snow storm. It's hideously dangerous on the freeway! When one front tire loses traction the truck will swerve violently in that direction. It completely changed lanes before I could correct for it. I shifted it into 2WD and didn't use 4WD on the road until I had put the open diff gears back in.
