new engine oil stained

I just rebuilt and did a break in on the new 302. I changed the oil after break in. ran it again for about an hour and changed again. 3rd oil change and the oil is slightly stained.

Is this normal?

Typically some 10 to 15 moderate full throttle accelerations are recommended to help seat the rings, don't red line it, but don't baby it either. You probably know all this stuff already. Sooty oil means rings aren't seated yet afaik.

Don't know what you are saying about "oil is slightly stained"?
The motor is still breaking in so you will have blow by the rings and metal still rubbing off.
Also who & how was the block and heads cleaned as they can add dirt to the oil if not cleand good.

makes good sense, thanks all

The block was professionally done. I did the heads but thoroughly cleaned them with high pressure water and solvent. Could still have some dirt in them though.

the oil is just a few shades darker than new oil. I was just concerned.

Just keep using high zinc oil if you have a flat tappet cam! You should be good though.

Drive it for a month or two. What else would you do anyway? Put some serious miles on it. Stop changing the oil. It can cause the rings to not seat.

Agree. Change the break-in oil and run the new oil for 500 to 1000 miles at least. Modern engines (yes, I know, much different) probably change the break-in oil only and then say just run the first oil change at the normal interval of 3,000 to 10,000 miles. I've even done almost that (for 2500 miles) on a rebuilt 302.
On that one I did the break-in, then ran it for about 250 miles before changing the initial break-in oil. Ran the next batch for 2,500 miles and then just used regular intervals after that.

Yours is luxuriating in a happy bath of ultra clean oil for sure. But it sounds a bit of overkill unless you overheat it or suspect some other issue.
