Accident!

Well I'm 14 don't have a license yet I still manage to have an accident. Last night I was pulling her in as usual after cleaning her, and I pulled in the garage(idling) and threw it into park and open the door and got out to make sure I was in far enough. As I was to the rear of the bed I hear the y-block screaming at 4000 rpm's all of a sudden and the truck starts moving back very quickly. I run and jump in it and shut the way over revving motor off but before I could do anything else the door(which was opened) nailed the garage door tracks and I hit the brakes right then. It pushed the door into my fender and now I have a big crease in my fender and my door won't open and I have on the door panel a big huge dent. Could somebody tell me why the motor decided to hit 4000+ rpms and it started to move backwards? Luckily my dad couldn't care less but man I'm pissed! Afterwords my dad started it right up and it pulled right in as usual. So if anybody has any ideas I'm welcome to them. Man this sucks! -4speed(check my gallery for a pic)

4speed,
I have no logical answer for you. Its terrible when stuff loke this happens. First let me say I'm glad just the truck was damaged! I've seen this happen before when I worked at a car dealership. Not only did your truck get damaged but just think WHAT IF....... lets not go there!

And look on the bright side, now you have a reason to get the rust repaired! (JUST KIDDING)

I'm very glad you're OK!

I was that age when I first looked for a truck. It took a whole year to find a farmer that would sell his truck. In 18 days I'll be 17. At 14 he already has a nicer looking truck than mine. (rolling frame)

Andrew,
Sorry to hear about your misshap I think something like this happens to all of us at times. Things just happen. When I was 15 I decided to take my 57 for a drive in the woods. Well I was going up a muddy hill and it slid into a tree and put a big dent in my fender. I was very upset but I have forgoten about it. Your dent doesn't look too bad and you may just need to readjust you door to make it open again. It could be worse

Thanks guys, I guess it could of been worse but there was no way I was going to watch her put a bigger dent in the fender! As for the age thing, ummm.... I'm just a huge car nut. My father and I bought it when I was 13 and most of the work is performed by myself. But now it looks like I won't get to back her out as often! Its nice(well, in a way) to hear that some of you have done some damage to the trucks. At least it wasn't my dads 97 F-150, it would of bent the cab, door etc. I was thinking that once you put it into park, it starts to idle faster, that was right when it redlined and started to move backwards fast! Do you think something might of stuck? -4speed(nathan, I can promise your frame is way nicer than mine!)

Very sorry to hear about your incident. Did you figure out what happened yet. I think you'll recover. I was imagining you jammed an open truck door into the garage. That wouldn't have been pretty.

The whole thing sounds strange. I didn't even know a Y-block could turn 4 grand. I just figured that's why Ford invented the small block a few years later.

It surely didn't sound like no y-block at 4grand! I have a small video clip of a few seconds as it just started to rev, I can post it up if you have any doubts about how it sounded. Yes it does sound strange, not only did it rev really high, but it somehow managed to back out when it was in park. I'm thinking of renaming her christine -4speed(the joys of stupidity)

Gee, let's see....

At 13, I -

Scraped a customers car against the side of the (gas station) garage door after doing an oil change.

Popped a wheelie with my first motorcycle, lost it and dumped it on it's side. (Again, still 13)

Got nailed by the cops for driving without a license. (Still 13)

Ah, the joys of youth....

I feel your pain.

Christine, LOL I dented the hood of my fathers old Chevy when I was about 15, (30 years ago). I was driving it around the yard while he was bowling. He was not a happy bowler that day.

Lots of young starters here, wish I had more intrest in fixing stuff when I was young, But all I wanted to do was drive whatever I had, and I did the very minimum to keep my cars running. I wonder what the average FTE users age is?

Oh and Happy Birthday Nathan (in 18 days). since I will probably forget by then.

Hey, if you need a fender, let me know. I know where there is a fender that has no rust, and no holes, and very minor body work. You have my aim name, so just im me, and ill get you a price. I wont make any money off of you, and i wont charge you to pull the fender (even though its like 30 bolts/nuts)

Re: Accident!

M.4S.F.

You are indeed very Lucky & Charmed if you think about it. And I, as well as the Rest of this list are extremely glad you Walked away from this mishap unscathed.

Yes it could very well have been much worse.

If you wind up needing a Set of Door Hinges let me know. And as soon as I am able to get my hands on them, they are here somewhere, we will working something out on them.

You have to realize that Your Truck is almost 50 years old. some of the parts are worn & you could have not gotten it all the way into park because of that. Plus your could have accidently tapped the Throttle Peddle upon exiting her or the Shift Linkage is right next to the Throttle Linkage & could have tangled w/ each other when you put her in Park because of Wear & Tear.....

The first vehicle I ever drove was Fathers '60 F-100 at the age of ten, all by myself . I was not big enough yet to swing a Pick-axe or wield a Shovel on the Granet Embankment that needed to go. So I got to drive the loads of to the drop off point.
Now that I have Uncle's '58 M-100 I feels something like going Full Circle.

Know what 4speed, if that's the worst thing that happens to you, you're about the luckiest guy around. I know that doesn't mean much right now, but as others have said, it happens to all of us.

A boss I had used to rail at the mechanics for roaring out of the service bays in reverse - holding the door open with their left hand, steering wheel in their right, looking back out through the door opening. After a couple of months, he was doing just what he told us not to. He caught the inside corner of the back of the door perfectly square on the inside of the service bay door opening. Pushed the door in and forward - sheared off both hinges. Took out the windshield, hood, front fender, front bumper, rocker panel, and a couple of other items. Brand new 1976 Ford. No broken bones but his left arm was sore as heck for a couple of weeks. He never said a word and the rest of us sure as heck didn't either.

Earl, It was going pretty fast when it nailed the rail for the garage door, luckily the door closes fairly good after bending the fender in a little bit and I didn't do as much damage as that other guy. I'm glad I didn't get hurt, but believe me, you don't think about sitting in a hospital bed when your trucks backing itself out!

Col, My hinges seem fine, but if it continues to drive itself, you might be getting an e-mail, I appricate the offer. Did you get my radio pics?

thanks guys, I'm going to stick with my theory and hope all goes well. -4speed
