new to the site and having issues in my 98 ranger 4.0 xlt 4 x 4 that that reverse quit working, reverse band snapped from what ive read,im wondering if a 2005 5r55e from a ranger is compatable in a 98?im having a hard time finding a used 98 5r55e trans,so i found an 05,also im not sure if the torque converter is ok,when in 1 or 2,it feels like the brake is on when accelerating, but if i shift into d it accelerates normal, ive never driven another ranger so i dont know if thats normal, but i doubt it,it doesnt even break the tires lose when in 1 or 2,any info on these issues would be a big help,i need to get started on this before that broken piece wedges in between the case and drum, thanks
As best as I can recall, the 4.0L OHV and the 4.0L SOHC have a slightly different rear face of block bolt pattern. One upper bolt was moved slightly when the SOHC was put in the Explorer. As long as both SOHC and OHV were in production the auto transmission cases had an extra bolt hole that would accommodate both OHV and SOHC. After 2001 when the OHV went away, I do not know if the transmission case bolt pattern was adjusted to eliminate the surplus OHV bolt hole. Take a look at your 98 trans case top bolts and another look at the 2005 case top bolts to make sure they are compatible. Either that or my old age and memory are finally catching up with me.
