No. They are completely different systems and the diagnostic connector is different. I use an Actron CP9125 on my OBD-II vehicles to retrieve codes.

As previously stated...no the OBD-I reader for your 1989 truck will not work on your 2008 OBD-II. My first ELM327 based reader was a BAFX 3127. It works well with FORScan and Torque. If you want a reader that has capabilities to read more than basic drivetrain codes then consider an OBDLink 426101 ScanTool MX Bluetooth. A little more pricey, but it can communicate to more of the modules installed on these modern vehicles. This device also works very well with Torque/Pro and FORScan if you have an android device.There are others that work with a PC.
Right now I suggest stopping by a parts store then have them run the code check for you. Get the codes then list them in a new thread on the proper forum.
