A4LD Swap
Thanks in advance,
Jimmy
From 'Scott':
I am currently swapping from an a4ld to a c5 in my 1988 4WD with a 2.9 and extended cab and I would like to make a few suggestions:
Above, it says you need to lengthen the rear driveshaft and shorten the front one. actually you only need to lengthen the rear driveshaft. You can avoid shortening the front one by using a front driveshaft from an 84-85 Bronco II or Ranger, which is already 4.5" shorter. Everything bolts up perfectly.
It also mentions that you need to modify the floorboard. Again you can avoid that by using original shifter and base along with the linkage from an 84-85 Bronco II or Ranger. Everything bolts up perfectly and no need to change the floorboard at all..
I wasn't clear on the flywheel info but I can tell you from personal experience that even though the flexplate bolt patterns are the same, they will not interchange from an a4ld to a c5. Using an a4ld
flexplate with a c5 tranny results in a gap of approx 1/4 - 1/2" between the bellhousing and block. using a flexplate from a c5 with an a4ld will do the opposite resulting in drawing the torque converter out of the front seal, pump, etc.
The only problem I have run into so far is having to fab/modify the kickdown linkage bracket, but as soon as i do, i will let you know.

jeff,
sounds like you have just about everything needed to get started. you will
have to fabricate a kickdown linkage cable bracket and bring the cable in
from the back of the tranny towards the front. remove the kickdown lever
off of the a4ld and put it on the c5 and that should work. just flip it
over and it will work. it did on mine anyways and i've been driving it for
several yrs without a hitch. the 2.8/c5's had a linkage rod instead of a
cable like the 2.9/afld's have, because of the 2.8's being a carb motor.
also make sure you get the flywheel spacer plate off of the 2.8. it may be
pressed on the c5 flywheel already. this is a must to make sure the torque
converter fits into the front pump far enuff to eliminate any fluid
leakage. the flywheel that came on the c5/2.8 has to be used with the c5
torque converter/tranny. even tho the bolt patterns are the same, the
a4ld flywheel will not interchange with the c5 torque converter/tranny.
let me know if you need any more help. i'd be glad to help where i can.
scott
p.s. the difference between the 2 trannys are like nite and day. you will
be pleased i'm sure. i run big tires on my 88 ranger ext cab 2.9 4wd and
with the a4ld i could bare turn the tires over in gravel, but after i
installed the c5 it throws rooter tails. seriously. good luck.
