I got an email today from Ford telling me there is a navigation update for sync 3. It says I can do it via a “USB shipment” for $150 or a file download for $109. Has anyone done this yet? Is it worth it? In my almost 3 years of ownership I’ve been very happy with sync 3 and the navigation.
Ive been a big Ford guy for ever. Owned dozens. This pi$$ed me off. My truck is a couple months old and they have the audacity to send it to me NOW and want me to pay after I just shelled out big money? Sorry Ford. Kiss my....
Same with the freezing door lock TSB. It has to freeze FIRST to be eligible, then, the fix MIGHT work. I’ll drive the thing through the dealers service bay overhead door if it freezes up and I’m stranded up north hunting. Sometimes I wonder, who thinks of this stuff? Oh, obviously NON-TRUCK USERS.
My truck is a 2017 with NAV built in early January 2017. The map version factory installed is from 2015.
Some things you should be aware of:
If you elect to pay for the download version of the map update, the company providing the update does not offer any warranty or guarantee that it will install or work properly.
If you elect to go with the usb key version they offer support BUT be aware that the map update is from 2018. Depending on the area you live and drive regularly thru that may be a problem.
I sprung for the usb version. It installed with no problem. However I have found some newly established roads in Pennsylvania that are simply missing from this latest map update. They exist just fine in Google Maps.
For folks in areas with poor cellular data (the primary reason I hear for someone wanting factory nav) you can pre-load areas of Google maps for offline use. Works great with Android Auto.

To be perfectly honest with you, I don’t think it’s worth it because if you’ve been using the stock navigation system without any major problems such as a street not being listed, just leave it as is because the new update is still behind other navigation sources such as Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze, Magic Earth, Sygic, etc, etc.
I’m sure you have an Android or iOS phone so you already have access to the most updated mapping info so save the $109.00 or $150.00 dollars and use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto when the stock navigation system lets you down and like you, I also used the stock navigation system since 2016 and I’ve been very happy with it.

Youll need to confirm, but I think you qualify for a free update if your vehicle purchase date was within 6 months of a new map update. It’s worth a call to a knowledgeable service person or the Sync customer care.
