I drove it to work. about 45 minutes, nothing abnormal happened. was early so went for coffee. the temp gauge went up a little more than usual while waiting for coffee and started running pretty rough . before I got my coffee she died on me so i pushed it into a parking spot and came back 3 hours later and it started up and i was able to drive home. any ideas on what could have caused this ? that day i put in a new fuel filter. just replaced the fuel pump. tuned the carb a little and it hasn't happened again but I'm worried that itll die in traffic at a light or something. wondering if I have cooling issues or any other ideas would be useful . thank you, I'm slowly getting this thing in tip top shape and this is a hurdle I need figured out soon.

Hello, I am definitely NOT the expert here, but I have read a lot of posts and it seems that the ignition control unit could cause that problem. Apparently, when it starts to fail, when it gets hot it does exactly what you are describing . ....kills engine and starts when cool again. I had a similar issue and bought a spare just in case. Someone will be along any minute now to tell you that I'm wrong and it's another problem altogether, but it's something to keep in the back of your mind.
previous owner did the motor swap. pretty sure it has one. but either way before I did a small tune up it was and still is a little lean. I think I have timing off as well. it's hard digging into a truck that was pieced together by someone else lol. I'll probably replace coil too
You can easily test the distributor module as well. Not the "ignition control module" but the stator inside the distributor.
Disconnect the 3-wire Dura Spark plug (assuming here for the moment that the ignition is factory Dura Spark) and measure the ohms between the two control wires. (Purple and Orange maybe? But not the black) You're looking for between 400 and 800 ohms.
Anything over or under those readings then the unit is failed.
In fact, if it's even close to one of those extremes I usually recommend just replacing it anyway.
I recently had a coil fail on my 390. I had a little sputter and rough idle for the day. I could hear it missing now and then. When I got in line at the Chikfila drive thru it died at idle and wouldn't start back up.
Sounds a lot like what you are talking about, though it could be other things.
I popped the spare coil I keep in my road tool box and was back running before anyone else in line had time to get mad at me. I've always kept a spare coil because when I was younger and driving VWs I had numerous ones die on me.
