Barely got her home today!

My 69 F250 almost left me stranded today. She started to miss, sputter, backfire and die only to be revived by the forward motion of the truck. It seems to idle OK, but any throttle and it starts missing. It seems to run OK for a few short spurts. The truck sat for about a week, and was running well last week. The problems started after a running some errands, short trips.

The ignition is all MSD, including the billet distributor, so I don't think my problem is ignition.

I'm thinking about the fuee pump, but would it even idle if was shot?

Any suggestions for beginning troubleshooting?

I'd drain out a mason jar of gas and let it set overnight and see how much water or junk is in the tank before I'd do the fuel pump. I've never had one idle with a bad fuel pump. Doesn't mean they won't, just saying mine never did. I'm sure you've probably arealdy checked the filters and such right? Let us know what you find.

Might want to check the filters in your carb also if you have them. I like my pressure guage. The only fuel delivery problem I could be having if it is reading 7psi is clogged filters.

Mr. Ratsmoker,

I was hoping to run into you, so to speak. I'm thinking about gearing my truck with much smaller gears so that I'm not running 3400 RPM at highway speeds. I would still like to pull a trailer if needed. Do you ever pull anything? I know you're not setup to pull with the high revving engine and the 3.25 gears, but I figure an FE and C6 are good for some pulling, regardless of engine setup and gears.

I wouldn't count-out that MSD just yet. I installed one of their ignition timing controls and barely made it a mile before my truck gradually lost all power above an idle. I turned around in someone's driveway but had no power to get out. Luckily, I left all of the old wiring intact so that I could re-install my original setup if necessary. I bypassed the MSD, and was back on my way again and running fine. After I got home, I double checked the MSD instillation according to the instructions and found nothing was wired wrong. I still need to talk to MSD about the problem before the warranty expires.

I had a '66 Pontiac (389HO V8) that had symptoms like you describe for a few days before the fuel pump finally gave up the ghost (I knew a lot less about cars and trucks, then). It would sometimes just completely lose power and sputter, only to recover soon thereafter.

Barely got her home today!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-May-02 AT 01:49 AM (EST)]Looks like I found the suspect. The white wire that would normally go from the MSD 6AL to the Ford distributor was shorting out. It is unused with the MSD distributor. The high tech insulator (electric tape), that was wrapped arounded the end connector was coming off and the connector was arcing to the intake manifold. I drove it to the carwash and back without any issues. The Fuel pump appears to be working well.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I wouldn't be afraid to pull anything my truck was originally intended to. I wouldn't cut back all the way from your 4.10 to 3.25s. That would make life pretty hard on the tranny. If you do want to go with 3.25s I would be more than happy to trade you third members!

The higher the gear in the back the more it takes to get the truck moving and the longer the converter will be in slip range. This will cause more heat and wear. In other words with a lower gear you will get more torque to the tires with less work from the engine and trans. Same would go for the clutch in a manual.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-May-02 AT 07:50 PM (EST)]just out of curiosity rat, what RPM do you turn at 60mph? I'm going 3000 with 4.10's and 235/75R15's and I'd kinda like to run 3.25's for better highway speed or highway runs, second is good to just shy of 60 right now so I'm thinking when I get the 410 in and if I went to 3.25-3.50's I'd be right in the range for quick passing, yeah that's it

The calculator says 2250 but I run about 2500 due to the stall. You're right that 410 won't need 4.10 gears to push you down the road.

GTEX, that white wire on the MSD can be used for an antitheft switch. Just wire it to a toggle and the other terminal to a ground. Then when you leave your vehicle, you can flip that switch and know that when someone tries to hot wire that vehicle it will just crank and not start. Cheap insurance. This is covered in your instructions and it works.

I like the idea of setting the rev limiter to about 1500rpm. That way they get the stealing part done but can easily get caught. Wouldn't that suck to get in a truck and start it up thinking all you gotta do is get away and find out it only goes 10MPH.

Thanks for the info on the "security system", sounds like something I might try.

regarding the gears, I was not thinking as low as 3.25, that's not really an option with the Dana 60. I think I can go as low as 3.33, but would probably be looking at something in the 3.55 range.

I figure I've got the suspension , transmission and brakes to handle just about anything I'm willing to put behind the truck. If my boat get's as big as I'd like :-) , I might have to change the cam and re-tune the carb. Do you guys think I would have to abandon the 750 carb to get the best low-rpm torque numbers? What about the RPM intake, would it be hurting the torque numbers?

I guess what I really want is one of those Gear Vendor Overdrive units! If you guys see one for a C6 anywhere, let me know!
