CJ21; my first year member and very appreciative for info and advice so far. Seeking information on installing 302 where the 8BA used to be. Where will I find motor mounts, will there be forward or back alignment movement.? Radiator positioning, questions re manifold and mufflers. The transmission will be an M5R2 and likely a remanufactured unit so do not have the year. It will replace the old 4 speed that is there now so will need to consider how to support it as well. I believe this has been done before so very hopeful on responses.
Tx in advance for any help
This is my setup. Off the shelf motor mounts, champion 3 row and longtubes for an 89 ford. Cut the brake booster plate from the donor truck firewall and used it's pedal bracket with fabbed pedals.
Motor is mounted with a 3/4" offset to the passenger side, placed it so the headers would clear the steering box. Radiator fits in the straight six position.
It will mount without removing the transmission crossmember but it's about an inch higher and an inch and a half farther forward than would be ideal and i would recommend removing it. But it's a beam axle truck without sway bars so it's not like i'm losing a nurbrug ring lap record to it. I'll just claim its gasser geometry. The pinto short oil filter clears the stock motor mounts but not the full size one. Also the '89 f150 starter relay bolted straight to the firewall, because of course it would.
I know it's getting to be a long thread, but I have quite a few pictures of installing a 302 with a C4 trans in my 49 F1. My motor mount kit came from speedway, and looks a lot like Steve's in his pics above. See link in my signature. I found it to be a relatively straightforward process, just a whole lot of wiggling. You will need a new drive shaft made, that's unavoidable unless you plan on mounting the 302 to the original trans, and in the original trans location.. hope that helps.
I used a M5R2 in my 56. If you are going with any year you can get - get one with a speedo gear- Maybe 89 or older?? Check out my basket case thread if interested.
