Here what I have...
Yes, also fighting a transmission leak. Its overfilled by alot from prior owner. Im hoping thats why it leaks, but at some point need to learn how to do the seals on the shift lever. A little afraid of the valve body...anyways, no tag, but took a pic of a stamp on the transmission. Im hoping I can get the correct linkage, replace the seals, replace the pan seal, and correctly fill all in one fell swoop.
Sorry for repeat images, I missed one and then several repeated.
That isn't the correct manual lever for a column shifter in a truck.
Maybe ND will give you a part number and engineering number for the correct one for a 1972 F100 with a C4.
I'm not sure if the manual levers are interchangeable between a C6 and a C4 but this is what it should look like. This one is from a truck C6 and is stamped D3TP-CA
In order to change the manual lever you have to remove the valve body. You might want to take it to a shop if you don't feel confident getting that far into it yourself.
The leak I'm seeing in your picture isn't the manual lever seal but is the kickdown lever "O" ring. That is an easy fix just remove that nut and the kickdown lever and put a new "O" ring in it.
I forgot one thing. Unless you have removed it for some reason your kickdown lever isn't connected to the throttle linkage.
Now, will it shift without that? Yes it will.
Will it shift like it is supposed to. No.
If you don't have the correct kickdown rod you can get an aftermarket cable kit.
Man, yeah, I have alot to get corrected. So a truck lever, a connection to the kickdown and an o ring. Thanks everyone for the help. Now I have to find all this stuff. Thanks for the part numbers ND!
Just came back in from replacing 2 sets of rear drum brakes, 2 rear leaking wheel cylinders. Now I need to run to Dennis Carpenters to get a set of brake lines. Thank God I live within 30 mins of there.
@cropduster what should the connection at the kickdown look like? Or what is the part number? I suppose I can match up an oring at Lowes for the kickdown. From what I am reading, this connects to the carburetor? Reference:
I have an Edelbrock 4 barrel carb tied to the 1994 mustang engine.
I do realize this may be getting out of range, and perhaps I could just take it to a shop, of course if we can find the right parts.
That manual lever looks about right. But with all those pictures none show the number stamped on it. I would get in touch with the seller and ask what number is on it. ND can use that number to see if it really is what they say it is. And remember this is the World wide web so anyone else that needs one may be reading this also.
Do not use hardware store "O" rings in your transmission. I would just wait until you have all hard to find parts gathered up then take it to a transmission shop. They will have all the seals and gaskets to fix the leaks. But pick a shop that has some old guys working in it. Otherwise the tech's will most likely never have seen a C4 before.
Good point on several levels. I edited that prior post to minimize more effect of the internet.
So I went to Dennis Carpenter's and happened upon a old gentleman who just sold an Ford dealership. Very nice guy and he has a tons of old truck parts. He's going to look into this and see if he has these parts in his old stock. He also noted that I was missing the kick down connection and he's going to look for it.
I have to say several people at Carpenters and the dealership guy were impressed with the number detail. I gave full credit to ND for that.
I also found out about an old F100 graveyard so there's a chance some of this stuff may work out.
The Gods of old trucks are certainly shining down today.
I suppose if push came to shove, someone could probably fabricate an extension on the arm I have to make it work.
I was about to buy this but wanted to make sure it's the right kick down cable. everything I read on the info sounds like it is but I want to verify with you guys. I have an Edelbrock carburetor four barrel if that matters.
