I recently bought a automatic C4 transmission that came from a 68 mustang that I want to swap to my 1965 F100 with 240 inline with 3 spd, will it bolt on directly? or do I need something else with it? Thanks
What engine was in the mustang? If it was a 289 or 302 it might fit if you get the correct flexplate. Ford did use C4's behind 240 I6's. See if you can get the number off of the converter housing, (bellhousing) and post it. You will have to get a driveshaft made that will work with that Mustang slip yoke. You didn't say what wheelbase your truck is. If it's a long wheelbase a one piece drive shaft probably won't work. Unless it's as big around as a sewer pipe.
The output shaft/extension housing will be too long on the Mustang C-4, compared to a C-4 for a truck, for it to be a direct bolt-in.
This is what the C-4 behind the 240 in my '69 F100 looks like.
The Mustang C-4 will have a 'step case' (right behind the converter housing) with a case fill dipstick/tube. The truck C-4 will have a 'flare case' with a pan fill dipstick/tube.
The shift lever on the side of the Mustang C-4 will be configured for a floor shifter. The lever in the side of the truck C-4 will be configured for a column shifter.
Thanks for the info guys, I bought mine from a 68 mustang with a 302 engine. I guess I need my driveshaft modified a bit. I have a step side 65 F100, so Its just a one driveshaft. although I still need the right yoke for the transmission
You will need the correct 240/300 flexplate. It should be a zero imbalance. I also would consider getting a 1972 300 six Carter YF with a conventional centrifugal/vacuum advance distibutor rather than the stock 240 vacuum only Loadamatic distributor paired with the Autolite 1100.
