Assembly order... confirmation?
Right now(as in right the minute, just a minute ago) I'm putting the timing cover and the oil pan back on. There's a lot of wiggle room on the timing cover. Manual says to use alignment tool, or put the balancer back on temporarily. Now I've done all that, and it's still got some room to maneuver. So I'm thinking I should leave the cover bolts 'snug' and then put the pan on to align it the rest of the way. I'm thinking, snug all the oil pan bolts, except the ones going to the timing cover, get those three started. Then tighten down the cover, then the three pan bolts going to the cover.
Now am I on the right track, way off, or just over thinking this? Would be really cool if all of you were online right now, because I'm on a dinner break, then back to bumbling through this.
I put the timing cover in place and then press on the balancer all the way. This centers the timing cover.
Then, I put in all the timing cover bolts and snug them down enough to keep the timing cover from moving at all.
Then, pull the balancer back off and fully and properly torque all the bolts on the timing cover.
Then install the oil pan bolts.
It'll be very close to lined up just right for the oil pan. Any little bit of slop (which won't be much) will be taken up by the gasket.
It's much more important to get the timing cover centered around the balancer than it is having it properly lined up with the oil pan. If the cover is off even slightly, the spinning of the balancer on the seal will burn right through it and cause a leak.
Fractions of an inch matter with it's alignment. However, fractions of an inch are not super relevant to a non-moving part (oil pan) when it's got a squishy gasket to take up any discrepancies.
